Once he cuts out the bulkhead, he is finally able to remove the original 18 gallon gasoline tank that has been trapped in that locker for 60 years! Herby then goes over the importance of having a dedicated machine room in the boat, as this gives you a place for the stuff that makes your boat work to live, and also simplifies maintenance as everything is in one place. Since Weize sent him the inverter, MPPT, solar panels, and LiFePO4 battery, he can try them in and see how much space do they actually take up in reality instead of just reading figures on paper and imagining how they would fit in there. Herby builds the rest of the structure using laminated wood and epoxy to make the deck portion of the ring frame. Together, these structural members will add stiffness and strength to the hull enabling it to withstand the punishing waves and brutal forces of offshore sailing. The large windows are a massive liability in the ocean because the large fragile windows can easily break when smashed by giant waves. Once the windows are broken, subsequent waves will flood the boat’s interior and sink you! Herby seals up the large holes with fiberglass and polyester resin from @TotalBoat by creating a strong and thick plug on inside. When he works on the deckhouse, he will then do the same on the outside. He also explains why these windows needed to be sealed up now because the inside will be built with epoxy and the outside with polyester. There are numerous issues with this rig which Herby will be correcting in the future to make this a true ocean cruiser and that all starts with getting rid of the mast! Herby uses the mast on Wisdom to drop the mast and get it out of the way so that work can progress and the boat can become readied for the new and improved rig.
