There are numerous issues with this rig which Herby will be correcting in the future to make this a true ocean cruiser and that all starts with getting rid of the mast! Bulwarks! They give slightly more freeboard to help keep ocean waves off the deck, and more practically, they give you something to walk on when heeled over really far while bluewater cruising. Herby builds the supports for the bulwarks with Totalboat Silica Thickener and Polyester Resin and then covers over the joint with 1708 fiberglass. This is the initial tabbing which will be further reinforced during later stages of the build. With no motor and dead rigging, the only option to move the boat is to tow it all the way into Baltimore where the project will be concluded. Come along on a wild ride as Windpuff gets towed by Herby’s dad’s boat. Along the way, Herby works on the bulwarks and deals with a free spinning propeller shaft, as well as copious amounts of water that splashes onto the deck but can’t currently drain away. The plan is to replace the gas engine with an electric engine that weighs around 120 pounds and produces 30hp! This sounds great, but first we have to get the old motor out of there and that is a tricky process. You need to make a form for the extension, then make a mold from that form, then make the part in that mold, then attach the part to your transom. On Windpuff, we are adding 4 extra feet to the back of the boat for various reasons, and this is all the work so far to make the idea transform into reality. This is not completed, and the connection is nowhere near finished, as now there is a lot of fiberglass and fairing left to finish the job, but I just wanted to show you all the process to get to this point. Sadly, the launching could not occur in a timely process and the result is that Windpuff needs to wait another winter on the hard. Why? Why so many through hulls? Each through hull is a potential leak point that could sink the boat, so reducing the number of through hulls also reduces your risk of sinking. The goal is to remove all of the through hulls, fiberglass over the holes to seal them up, and get the boat ready to splash so that it can be towed up to Baltimore where work can proceed at a much faster pace.
