This stretch of coast is NO JOKE! Sailing past Venezuela.... To learn more about Keane Insurance and to seek your bespoke boat policy check them out here 👉https://keanespecialty.com/get-a-quote?pid=YSN 🫡 Who would have thought we would find ourselves anchored deep in the South American jungle? But somehow, here we were, tucked away up a muddy river in French Guiana, all because we had to dodge a rocket launch! Of all the reasons to end up in the jungle, that certainly wasn't one we saw coming! Turning our attention back to the Atlantic Ocean, we had one last challenge ahead of us, getting Nandji 2 safely out of this brown, murky river and back into the open ocean. Navigating muddy waters comes with its own set of challenges. With almost no visibility beneath the surface, we had to carefully time our departure around the tides, currents and wind. There needed to be enough water beneath our keel to safely cross the shallow mudbanks guarding the river entrance, while avoiding the breaking swell that can build as the ocean meets the shallows. Throw in a 20 knot trade wind against the current, things could get interesting! We had already spent 24 hours anchored up, waiting for all these conditions to line up and give us the safest possible window to escape. With another 600 nautical miles separating us from Grenada and the Caribbean, we are on the home stretch of our Atlantic crossing from Africa. Having sailed thousands of miles to get this far, we know that some of the trickiest moments of sailing aren't necessarily in the middle of the ocean. Sometimes, it's the first few miles that demand the most attention... An unexpected stop in the Amazon jungle. French territories are always a fun stop! To learn more about Keane Insurance and to seek your bespoke boat policy check them out here 👉https://keanespecialty.com/get-a-quote?pid=YSN 🫡 Since leaving the continent of Africa, together as a family We have sailed across the prime meridian, crossed the equator between south and north and entered into the Northern Atlantic Ocean. We have now sailed in the n north and south of every ocean on the globe and have found ourselves on a new continent, South America, for the very first time. With a baby on the way, this journey has been an amazing experience, a massive milestone in our circumnavigation and we have made memories as a family that will last a life time. Now her we are, in French guinea of all places, up a river in the Amazon jungle. After being on a Rolly boat at sea only stopping in Rolly anchorage’s, it feels like we haven’t slept on a calm surface for months. Now safely moored in a river, away form the presence of waves and ground swell, our last couple of nights sleep has been nothing short of a hibernation! Now with a baby on the way, we will have couple more days to relax before we push on for the next stretch to the Caribbean! IT'S OFFICIAL! We have sailed across the Atlantic Ocean! Arriving to French Guiana and the Salvation Islands. Home to a notorious penal colony where the book Papillion was based. From the early 1850s, and for almost a century after, France transported prisoners sentenced to hard labour across the Atlantic Ocean to French Guiana, with the Salvation Islands becoming one of the most notorious parts of the penal colony. Surrounded by ocean and strong currents, escape was considered almost impossible. I think that’s part of the reason Papillon’s story captured the imagination of so many. Henri Charrière was certainly a great storyteller, but as time has gone on, it seems the man behind Papillon wasn’t going to let the truth get in the way of a good yarn. Many of the stories he told are now believed to have been borrowed from the experiences of other prisoners. But whether every adventure was truly his or not, the horrors he described were very real, and the salvation islands became the centrepiece of his story. And our first impression, it’s hard to wrap your head around it. Surrounded by palm trees and a tropical landscape, these beautiful islands housed so many horrors and was once home to one of the most feared penal colonies in the world. It is not every day you need to avoid Rocket launches at sea! To learn more about Keane Insurance and to seek your bespoke boat policy check them out here 👉https://keanespecialty.com/get-a-quote?pid=YSN 🫡 Definitely not your usual navigational hazard to account for… but when there’s a chance of rocket debris falling from the sky, it’s probably something worth avoiding. Thankfully, that’s a problem for future us to worry about. For now, there’s not a lot to do but keep making miles towards the salvation islands. Since leaving Africa, we have ailed nearly 5,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, and after all those days at sea, our Atlantic crossing is beginning to draw to a close. We are yet to lay eyes on the continent of South America, butn as the Salvation Islands lay just a few miles off the coast of French Guiana, reaching them will mark the moment we officially have crossed the Atlantic ocean. Another ocean sailed. Another continent visited and Another milestone in this crazy journey as a growing family. From the dusty dirt tracks of Namibia to 5000 miles of Atlantic ocean and into the amazon rain forrest. The perfect tool for every traveller. Check out Holafly using this link 👉 https://hfly.co/w5p2v Use the code word: SAILINGNANDJI and get 5% off on eSIMs and 10% off on Holafly plans We tried to overland Africa in a Landcover defender. Can’t say we are not adventurous but Turns out sailors should probably stick to knowing what they know best. Sailing. Although, to be fair, things didn’t exactly get easier when we made it back to the boat. After everything we had been through on the road, returning to Nandji only to discover that she wasn’t to be outdone. installing 2 motors in 2 different vessels… Fast forward a couple of months… over 5,000 miles sailed and a few island stops along the way. We find ourselves on the other side of the Atlantic and an Ocean crossing nearly all but done. We are on a completely different continent and when you stop for a second and actually think about that… its been quite the run of events. Not that long ago, we were sitting on the side of a dirt road in the middle of the Namibian desert with a broken-down Land Rover, no idea how we were going to get moving again, Sun setting and being stalked by jackals… And now? We’re thousands of miles away, Motoring Nandji 2 up a river deep into the Amazon jungle…. Same family. Same slightly questionable decision-making. But most importantly, those experiences taught us a few things. And Staying connected matters. New Ocean and New Challenges. Even the best plans need some adjustment. Adapt and Evolve. To learn more about Keane Insurance and to seek your bespoke boat policy check them out here 👉https://keanespecialty.com/get-a-quote?pid=YSN 🫡 Five days into the passage, roughly 800 miles sailed, we are roughly around the halfway mark. This passage has been a very different strategy to the sailing we done down south. Crossing from four degrees south to five degrees north, that’s around 1,500 miles right through the doldrums. Light and unpredictable winds, plenty of squalls, and the potential for some heavy localised thunderstorms, it demanded a different game plan to get across the equator and into the northern Atlantic Ocean With the Cape Index reading low, the conditions were about as favourable as we could hope for without getting hammered by the worst of the weather. Whilst you can’t complain when the ocean looks like this. But With a pregnant partner, and still a long way to go, we have been relying heavily on the engine. And calm weather brings plenty of time to contemplate about how much diesel we have and how far we can motor with what we have... Leaving the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, we are travelling from 4 degrees south, to 5 degrees north. That’s 1500 miles in the stormy windlass doldrums…. Then the engine cuts out.... www.sailingnandji.com Before any big passage, the key in making the miles ahead more enjoyable, there’s two basic necessities needed: food and diesel. Have plenty of both, and you can make the miles ahead a lot more comfortable. With an equator crossing coming up, we need plenty of diesel, but we have used than we expected arriving to Brazil and it is hard to fill a sailboat full carrying only 60 litres at a time, but a little each day and one day, the tanks will be full. Now for the food provisions. Shopping in Portuguese has been a fun novelty, though after months on the move since leaving the supermarkets of south Africa, we are starting to get low in all our staple items that are a sailors best friend. Canned goods. dry snacks and ithe one thing no Nandji sailor should ever be without… Instant coffee. Use the discount code: SAILINGNANDJI to get 5% off on eSIMs and 10% off on Holafly Plans (for the first 12 months) 👉 https://hfly.co/qjrar Happy Travelling Being an island a couple of hundred miles off the coast, and our very first taste of Brazil, we really had no idea what to expect. Saint Helena had been pretty challenging when it came to fresh produce, so when we walked into the shops here, the shelves may have looked a little barren, but compared to our last island stop 15 days ago, this felt like a super store. Of course, arriving somewhere new by boat is never quite as simple as just dropping the anchor, there is whole bunch of unknowns and challenges to face. There's clearance to sort out, a completely new language to butcher, in this Portuguese, and the small problem that absolutely nobody understands what the hell we are saying. Add a rolly anchorage, tropical rain, and a few other little curveballs, and it's pretty easy for the excitement of arriving somewhere new to wear off pretty quickly. But then we met the port captain. He was friendly, incredibly helpful, and made the whole clearance process an absolute breeze. With a little help from Holafly and Google Translate, we were chatting away, laughing, and pretending we knew exactly what was going on. But first impressions? Yeah… we're going to like it here. It's loud, it's colourful, it's vibrant, and there's a whole lot going on. And when you can chuck your surfboard into the front seat of a taxi and search for waves, it gets my instant tick of approval Brazil, you've got our attention. To learn more about Keane Insurance and to seek your bespoke boat policy check them out here 👉https://keanespecialty.com/get-a-quote?pid=YSN 🫡 Life at sea is always about finding a balance. The balance between survival and enjoyment. Between speed and comfort. Between pushing the boat forward and knowing when to simply slow things down. It is a constant dance between the sails, the wind and the ocean. We want Nandji 2 to be fast and efficient, but more importantly, we need to be safe, comfortable and keep things manageable. But when dealing with a confused four metre Atlantic Ocean, finding that balance becomes a little more challenging. After more than a week at sea, and 36 hours of heavier weather. Fatigue starts to creep in, and tasks that would normally feel simple, suddenly require a lot more effort. A simple sail change becomes a battle of thoughts in your mind. Knowing that if done, it will be beneficial, yet the voice eon your head relentlessly asks the question, can’t it wait…. And that’s the reality of life offshore. There are moments out here that feel almost dreamlike. Days where the ocean is calm, the sailing is effortless and you feel incredibly lucky to be exactly where you are. And then there are days like this. The kind where the ocean feels relentless, where sleep comes in broken pieces, and where simply moving around the boat takes more energy than it normally would. There’s simply nowhere to hide out here. You can’t escape the wind. You can’t escape the waves. And you certainly can’t escape the fatigue All you can really do is accept it and remind yourself that this rough patch will pass. Because just like the weather changes, so does the fatigue. Thankfully, Nandji 2 is a boat that knows how to look after us. She’s proven herself time and time again to be a capable and trustworthy passage maker. So for now, our job is pretty simple. Hang on. Rest when we can and let Nandji 2 do what she does best. To learn more about Keane Insurance and to seek your bespoke boat policy check them out here 👉https://keanespecialty.com/get-a-quote?pid=YSN 🫡 There is lots to think about to sea…. When the weather is calm and Nandji 2 is happily eating up the miles, there really is not a whole lot to do on watch. We live so much in the moment when sailing, And when there’s nothing demanding your attention, your mind has plenty of room to wander. Spending days on end at sea can change your outlook on life. We really appreciate the little things and The feeling of knowing the people you love are right there beside you. Sure we have Brazil as our next destination, but like life, the journey there is just as much fun. Sitting solo in the cockpit, watching the world slowly drift by under the keel, it is hard not to contemplate about the changes that are silently happening. There are some important decisions to make, the future we are trying to build, and how we can give our family and our expecting baby the best possible life relies on making the best one. Bonita is halfway through her pregnancy, and suddenly the reality of just how quickly life is changing is sinking in. This baby is coming. And as exciting as that is, the last place we want is to be somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic ocean when the time comes. So for now, there’s nothing we can do but keep sailing and keep pondering our thoughts. About 1000 miles still stand between us and the next piece of land. 1000 miles of ocean, and plenty of time to think. Once we've cleared out, the countdown begins, and we have 48 hours to leave the island. With the constant presence of swell creating a Rolly anchorage, and the subsequent surge of water in the corner, making every landing a challenge The little yellow ferry is our ride back and forth as we gather the last few things before heading back out into the Atlantic 0ocean. Potentally, We could be at sea for another 2 weeks, so stocking up with as much fresh food is high on the priority list. Almost everything on Saint Helena arrives by ship, and as sailors just passing through, we never quite figured out when the supermarkets are restocked. Every trip ashore involved wandering in hope to find fresh fruit and vegetables... though most of the time have ended up empty handed . With a baby on the way and another 1,800 miles of ocean ahead, we wanted one final check-up to make sure everything was looking good before setting sail. And yes... this little building is part of the island's hospital. Thankfully, everything looked perfect. Mum's doing well, bub's is doing well, and with that bit of reassurance, there was only one thing left to do... enjoy one last meal cooked by someone else. With the last of our provisions, we say goodbye to Saint Helena, and head back to Nandji 2. This little island in the middle of the ocean has well and truly exceeded every expectation. It's unlike anywhere else we have visited, full of history, friendly faces and some incredible landscapes. To learn more about Keane Insurance and to seek your bespoke boat policy check them out here 👉https://keanespecialty.com/get-a-quote?pid=YSN 🫡 Here we are, anchored in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean at the tiny volcanic island of St Helena. After two weeks at sea, dropping the anchor into crystal-clear water, surrounded by an abundance of marine life, made every mile of the crossing worthwhile. St Helena may be one of the most remote inhabited islands on Earth, but for sailors, it's been an important landfall for centuries. Long before us modern day sailors crossed these waters, generations of seafarers relied on this tiny island as a welcome sight after months at sea. It was First discovered by the Portuguese in 1502 while searching for a sea route between Europe and India, it's easy to see why they tried to keep it a secret. With Fresh water, fertile land and a safe place to rest made St Helena a priceless stop in the middle of an otherwise unforgiving ocean. By the mid-1600s, England's East India Company recognised just how strategically important the island was. This very bay of Jamestown would have been filled with tall sailing ships carrying tea, spices, silk, cotton and other precious cargo bound for Europe. The island became so valuable to the Brits, who still govern the island today, they fortified it with batteries and forts overlooking the harbour to protect both the island and the ships anchored below. Like how’s this fort we are anchored under now! For nearly 200 years, St Helena served as one of the most important resupply ports in the world. And in many ways, not much has changed. Today, us yachties arrive here for exactly the same reasons those early explorers did all those years ago Get Early access to our videos here - https://www.patreon.com/Nandji to get in touch email us at frothlyfe@gmail.com #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #atlanticocean #boatlife #sailingfamily #ad #travelvlog #travel #sthelena #sainthelena Support Sailing Nandji here ❤️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Nandji Merch: https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Sailingnandji For a once off pledge, check out the Paypal link above Socials and all the other places you will find us🤘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnandji Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_nandji Website: https://www.sailingnandji.com SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletter on our website for updates on our adventures! And wow... it feels good to be here. Waking up with the anchor down in warm sunshine and crystal-clear water is about the best welcome we could have hoped for. The passage from South Africa had a little bit of everything. From riding out a gale to spinnaker sailing for days on end, It was an unforgettable journey. But after two weeks at sea, it feels nice to have the anchor down and resting before setting off on the next leg of the adventure. First things first though... we need to make clearance into the island, stretch our legs, and restock the boat, because our last green vegetable disappeared a few days ago.... The Atlantic Ocean has transformed from the angry cold southern waters and faded into a calm deep blue, the skies have cleared and the strong wind has softened into a gentle breeze. The Days drift by under the warm sunshine and it is to feel the warmth again Now more than halfway to the island of St Helena. Our first destination across the Atlantic is beginning to feel within reach but being surrounded by the endless blue, it still feels a world away… Get Early access to our videos here - https://www.patreon.com/Nandji to get in touch email us at frothlyfe@gmail.com #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #atlanticocean #oceancrossing #boatlife #sailingfamily #ad #holafly #esim #travelvlog #travel Support Sailing Nandji here ❤️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Nandji Merch: https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Sailingnandji For a once off pledge, check out the Paypal link above Socials and all the other places you will find us🤘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnandji Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_nandji Website: https://www.sailingnandji.com SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletter on our website for updates on our adventures! But the ocean doesn’t give you the option to escape... With nowhere to hide and no way around it, we found ourselves directly in the path of the blow. As pitch black night from cloud cover and heavy weather are a completely different experience. You can’t see the waves building behind you, you can only feel the boat climb, crash, and surf into the unknown. The wind howls through the rig, the cockpit disappears into darkness, and every movement becomes a reminder of just how small we are in this vast ocean. It’s loud. It’s unpredictable. It’s uncomfortable. And for hours, all you can do is trust your preparation, trust your boat, and ride it out until sun rise. But this is exactly why we love Nandji 2. When the ocean turns against us and conditions become challenging, she looks after her crew. She carries us safely through the chaos, keeping us comfortable even when the world outside is anything but. By now with the sun well and truly up, the gusty 40-knot winds had eased back to a more manageable 25 knots and Nandji 2 was flying Get Early access to our videos here - https://www.patreon.com/Nandji to get in touch email us at frothlyfe@gmail.com #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #atlanticocean #oceancrossing #boatlife #sailingfamily #ad Support Sailing Nandji here ❤️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Nandji Merch: https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Sailingnandji For a once off pledge, check out the Paypal link above Socials and all the other places you will find us🤘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnandji Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_nandji Website: https://www.sailingnandji.com SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletter on our website for updates on our adventures! Now, 48 hours into our Atlantic crossing, we're settling back into life at sea. If all goes to plan, it should take another nine or ten days to reach the remote island of St Helena. The winds have been lighter than forecast, and with much of the sailing upwind, our progress has been slower than we'd hoped. But the calm seas have been a welcome trade-off, giving us time to find our rhythm again, settle the nerves, and ease into what will be a very long journey ahead. With a Gale on the way, the nerves build.... We relieve each other from watch, trying to find our rhythm and slowly adjust to life offshore. Resetting our body clocks to match our new watch schedule, is one of the most important parts early on of a long passage. The calm conditions are helping for now, but in reality, only time at sea can truly make the routine feel natural. The nerves need to settle and we need to get sleep At 32 degrees south, we are still a long way from where we need to be. Thousands of miles of open ocean lie ahead, before we reach our first landfall — the remote island of St Helena at 15 degrees south. This opening stretch of the Atlantic crossing we expect to be the most challenging, whilst calm now, we need to work our way north out of the shifting high and low pressure systems to reach the more settled and predictable trade winds. And this is only the beginning… By the time we arrive in the Caribbean, we will have sailed more than 7000 nautical miles, crossing from 32 degrees south all the way to 12 degrees north. It is an enormous piece of ocean to cross… Get Early access to our videos here - https://www.patreon.com/Nandji to get in touch email us at frothlyfe@gmail.com #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #atlanticocean #oceancrossing #boatlife #ad Support Sailing Nandji here ❤️ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Nandji Merch: https://sailingnandji-shop.com I recommend the coffee mug 👌 Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/Sailingnandji For a once off pledge, check out the Paypal link above Socials and all the other places you will find us🤘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingnandji Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sailing_nandji Website: https://www.sailingnandji.com SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletter on our website for updates on our adventures! But now, she’s moving again. The lines are off, the engine is purring, and we’re finally back where we belong, out here on the open ocean, with nothing but horizon ahead and miles disappearing beneath the keel. This is the beginning of a 7,000 plus, nautical mile journey across the Southern Atlantic, bound for the Caribbean. After not sailing for so long, it is A distance that feels almost too big to comprehend, unless we break it down, one passage at a time. And it all begins with this first step, 50 miles north to a small island off the coast of South Africa.
