Is navigating the challenging tidal River Trent as difficult as we thought? We start in the historic town of Gainsborough, where we explore its ancient past and impressive architecture, including the famous Old Hall. We then make our careful departure from the Gainsborough pontoon, explaining how we manage the boat with the strong running tide. You will see the impressive currents of the Trent, the techniques we use to steer Happidaze, and the vigilance required to avoid floating debris. Our route takes us past river landmarks and through varying conditions, from stretches of wide river to narrower sections and a strategic passage under the railway viaduct. We share our practical insights into navigating a tidal river, discussing the importance of timing departures for optimal water levels and flow, and how our boat's hydraulic steering performs in these dynamic environments. The episode culminates with our arrival and transition into the calm waters of Torksey Lock, marking our entry onto the Fossdyke Navigation. Thank you for watching! We launch into the thrilling first leg of our journey from Yorkshire to Cambridgeshire via the tidal River Trent and the Wash. Tackling the fast-flowing tidal waters, we exit Keadby Lock one hour before high tide to harness the river's current. It's a nerve-wracking moment when the massive Keadby Lock gates open, revealing the vast Trent. How will our wide beam, Happidaze, handle the challenging currents and debris with her hydraulic steering, something Jamie has been concerned about. From navigating tight bends to spotting a majestic barn owl and dreaming of riverside mansions, this episode features beautiful scenery, essential boating tips, and the excitement of a grand British waterway expedition. Will we make it to Gainsborough precisely as the tide turns, allowing for a perfect mooring? Or will the Trent throw us a curveball? Thank you for watching! The Keadby Lock repair was slowly coming together, and it had begun to operate for about one hour twice a day. Because timing the departure now required the highest degree of accuracy, our tidal calculations for the River Trent were becoming crucial. While we waited for the lock to be repaired, as issue with our canal boat’s fan belt held us back and cocked up our plans... We needed replacements, but without an address, it was proving difficult to arrange delivery. It’s these little things that can cock up your plans. Between us and the River Trent is a 100-year-old railway swing bridge and a 224-year-old lock. If there is a mechanical failure at either of these venerable structures, we'll have to wait. If they both break down, we could end up being stuck between the two. But first, we have some wildlife to spot, countryside landscapes to pass through, and a trip to the ancient town of Crowle. Free power and unlimited water on the UK's canals? As sailors on the open oceans, we lived completely independently. We created our own power and produced our own water. It was a lifestyle we've been wanting to replicate on the canals of the UK, and now that we're continuous cruisers, we have achieved this. In fact, we are producing so much power we don't know what to do with it, and so much water we can shower every day - not that we do! We do all of this as we continue eastwards along the Stainforth and Keadby Canal towards the River Trent. Along the way, we encounter Maud's Swing Bridge, which appears to be broken, and the Crook O’Moor Swing Bridge at Medge Hall before tying up at Groves Farm. We take in some incredible scenery that truly highlights British nature at its best. We've left the marina, we've refuelled, and filled with water. Now it is time to begin our journey! This week's episode goes back to our old style of vlogging: lots of action and travel, as well as some gorgeous footage of the great British countryside. We take you to two moorings, one lock, three bridges, all along the Stainforth and Keadby canal, heading east out of Thorne towards the River Trent. There's a lot to see, so we hope you enjoy this little adventure. Oh, and happy birthday, Marley! Over the last 18 months, we've been getting our canal boat prepared, all the while writing a book! We're now ready to begin our journey from Yorkshire to the Fens via the tidal Trent and out into the Wash. Are we and the boat ready for this big trip? After finding a leak in the engine bay, it seems there are more maintenance jobs to undertake, but we won't let this stop us from slipping the lines and getting our toes wet once more. We give a little overview of our proposed journey, which takes us onto the River Trent. It's tidal and meandering, and we've never taken a canal boat onto this type of body of water. But before we can even get there, we have to wait until a few repairs have been completed on the Stainforth and Keady Canal, including that pesky railway bridge that seems to go out of action every other day! Please do subscribe to our channel and give us a thumbs up - it really helps us get noticed. It’s been exactly a year since we swapped our sailing boat for a widebeam canal boat, after nearly 20 years living afloat. How has it been — and do we have any regrets? Before reflecting on our first 12 months aboard Happidaze, we take a quick look at Liz’s new book. She’s been commissioned by Bloomsbury to write a guide to casting off and setting sail, which explains her recent radio silence. Meanwhile, Jamie has been busy editing the photographs. In this video version of the podcast, we share a few of those images as a gentle reminder of our time aboard SY Esper. Thanks for coming along for the ride! We decommission our electric pump-out toilet and replace it with a separating toilet, often called a composting toilet. Why would we do this? What was wrong with our old loo? At £25 a pump-out every four weeks, and a lack of pump-out facilities on the canal network, a separating toilet offers us complete freedom. But it's not just about convenience and cost savings – it's about sustainability too. Our new Separett Villa toilet uses little water, requires minimal electricity, and prevents chemical waste from entering our waterways. The waste naturally composts down into usable material, creating a closed-loop system that's perfect for off-grid living. But doesn't it smell? In this episode, we show you the full job, excuse the pun, of removing our old electric pump-out toilet and installing our new eco-friendly, aroma-free loo. We'll cover the complete installation process and discuss some advantages of a separating toilet for canal boat living. Key Benefits: 🌱 Little water consumption – no flushing needed ༄ Zero smells ⚡ Minimal electricity required – perfect for off-grid living 💧 No chemical discharge into canals ♻️ Natural composting process – waste becomes usable compost 💰 Saves £300+ per year on pump-out fees 🚤 Complete freedom from pump-out station locations 🌍 Reduced environmental footprint on our waterways Support our work 🎞️ https://followtheboat.com/pub/ 😊 LET'S CONNECT! https://discord.gg/WGtsJubdkE https://www.facebook.com/followtheboat/ https://www.instagram.com/followtheboat/ 📷Jamie's Photography - https://jamiefurlong.com Followtheboat Live - @followtheboatlive 🌻 https://youtu.be/jZkk4ZiFPeI 🐾 https://youtu.be/9574XmkhnbE Thank you for watching! There is no such thing as a 'last' job, because maintenance never ends on a boat, but recommissioning our diesel generator is essential if we want to be continual cruisers on the canals and waterways of England! It's been held up by a broken bolt that we need to drill out and retap, but finding someone to assist was proving difficult. Fortunately, along came Matthew of Thorne Boat Services on the Stainforth and Keadby Canal. Taking this opportunity, Jamie moved our widebeam canal boat through Thorne Lock and downstream in high winds to the workshop. But fixing the bolt is only half the problem. When we initially ran the generator, it was cutting out after just a couple of minutes, so something was clearly wrong. Jamie suspects the thermostat, so he sets out to clean the cooling system, which, it turns out, was filthy! We're so close to casting off the lines and starting our full-time cruising dream, but it feels like we're hitting every possible roadblock. In this week's video, we're dealing with a double dose of disaster: a broken Webasto heater just as the cold is setting in, and our troublesome generator. We begin the installation of an OffGrid Water purification and filtration system for our widebeam canal boat... and we know you have concerns! To address this, we take a look at the science behind this 6-filter and UV solution, and discuss how pure our water will be after running through this system. We then discuss all the different installation locations around the boat, including installing the unit outside under the seat in the bow, as well as options inside. Can we make canal water drinkable? An August Bank Holiday is more than just a trip to the seaside; it’s a snapshot of Britishness: ice cream and chips, wind and rain, chaos and myths, and above all, a shared sense of tradition. Bank holidays are now such a familiar part of British life that we’ve forgotten where they came from, or why they are called “Bank” holidays at all. Here we share some black and white photographs from a classic British seaside resort. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkl0_R0LT6deoJjS4bNanmw?sub_confirmation=1 Ever looked at the canal and wondered if you could actually drink it? In this video, we're tackling that exact question by planning and designing the ultimate water purification system to turn murky canal water into safe, crystal-clear drinking water right on my narrowboat. We break down the science behind a complete filtration and sterilisation process. We're going way beyond a simple camping filter to design a robust system that can handle everything from silt and algae to invisible chemical contaminants, bacteria, and viruses. This is the complete blueprint for true water independence on the cut. Whether you're a fellow boater, living the van life, or just curious about off-grid living, this is the deep dive you've been looking for.
