We lost control of our widebeam canal boat in a gale in England. Who said strong winds were the preserve of sailors? It turns out that the "wrong" wind can affect canal boats as much as sailing boats. It was Marley-the-dog's first trip, so how did he do? Fortunately, we were joined by Jamie's brother Tim and his daughter Annie, who have much experience with dogs. Tim was the perfect crew. Our passage took us along the New Junction Canal and onto the Aire and Calder Navigation, a first for us. The two canals are distinctly different, with one tree-lined and the other completely exposed; the latter had us stuck at Pollington Lock for the night. At 06:00 the boat shook to the sound of thunder: we had just experienced an earthquake at anchor. Roughly 90 percent of all earthquakes and 75 percent of all active volcanoes on Earth occur along the Ring of Fire, and we have been sailing in this seismic minefield for the last ten years. We've experienced a few earthquakes first hand, but never before at sea. In 2022, we arrived in the Sunda Islands where we have seen more volcanoes than anywhere else. In the podcast we try to work out why people choose to live in such a risky area. Back in 2019, we sailed to one of the most famous volcanoes in the world: Krakatoa.
