We decommission our electric pump-out toilet and replace it with a separating toilet, often called a composting toilet. Why would we do this? What was wrong with our old loo? At £25 a pump-out every four weeks, and a lack of pump-out facilities on the canal network, a separating toilet offers us complete freedom. But it's not just about convenience and cost savings – it's about sustainability too. Our new Separett Villa toilet uses little water, requires minimal electricity, and prevents chemical waste from entering our waterways. The waste naturally composts down into usable material, creating a closed-loop system that's perfect for off-grid living. But doesn't it smell? In this episode, we show you the full job, excuse the pun, of removing our old electric pump-out toilet and installing our new eco-friendly, aroma-free loo. We'll cover the complete installation process and discuss some advantages of a separating toilet for canal boat living. Key Benefits: 🌱 Little water consumption – no flushing needed ༄ Zero smells ⚡ Minimal electricity required – perfect for off-grid living 💧 No chemical discharge into canals ♻️ Natural composting process – waste becomes usable compost 💰 Saves £300+ per year on pump-out fees 🚤 Complete freedom from pump-out station locations 🌍 Reduced environmental footprint on our waterways Support our work 🎞️ https://followtheboat.com/pub/ 😊 LET'S CONNECT! https://discord.gg/WGtsJubdkE https://www.facebook.com/followtheboat/ https://www.instagram.com/followtheboat/ 📷Jamie's Photography - https://jamiefurlong.com Followtheboat Live - @followtheboatlive 🌻 https://youtu.be/jZkk4ZiFPeI 🐾 https://youtu.be/9574XmkhnbE Thank you for watching! There is no such thing as a 'last' job, because maintenance never ends on a boat, but recommissioning our diesel generator is essential if we want to be continual cruisers on the canals and waterways of England! It's been held up by a broken bolt that we need to drill out and retap, but finding someone to assist was proving difficult. Fortunately, along came Matthew of Thorne Boat Services on the Stainforth and Keadby Canal. Taking this opportunity, Jamie moved our widebeam canal boat through Thorne Lock and downstream in high winds to the workshop. But fixing the bolt is only half the problem. When we initially ran the generator, it was cutting out after just a couple of minutes, so something was clearly wrong. Jamie suspects the thermostat, so he sets out to clean the cooling system, which, it turns out, was filthy! We're so close to casting off the lines and starting our full-time cruising dream, but it feels like we're hitting every possible roadblock. In this week's video, we're dealing with a double dose of disaster: a broken Webasto heater just as the cold is setting in, and our troublesome generator. The generator is the very last thing standing between us and life on the cut. On top of the mechanical mayhem, we're also navigating a more personal challenge: our lovely dog Marley's anxiety. Is this the ultimate off-grid water solution for boat life? We've finally solved the biggest problem every boater faces: running out of fresh water. For years, we've been rationing every drop, planning our entire route around the next water point. In this video, we install and review the OffGridWater 3-stage filtration and reverse osmosis system, a complete game-changer that has given us total water freedom. We're turning dirty canal and river water into a limitless supply of pure, safe drinking water right from our narrowboat. If you're tired of water anxiety, you need to see this. Imagine taking endless hot showers, using the washing machine whenever you want, and never having to conserve water again. This isn't a dream—it's our new reality. We'll show you exactly how this powerful watermaker works, from the initial filtration of river water (Stage 1) to the final purification with the impressive reverse osmosis unit (Stage 3). Is a DIY water system worth it, or is this pre-built solution the key to unlimited off-grid living? An August Bank Holiday is more than just a trip to the seaside; it’s a snapshot of Britishness: ice cream and chips, wind and rain, chaos and myths, and above all, a shared sense of tradition. Bank holidays are now such a familiar part of British life that we’ve forgotten where they came from, or why they are called “Bank” holidays at all. Here we share some black and white photographs from a classic British seaside resort. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkl0_R0LT6deoJjS4bNanmw?sub_confirmation=1 Ever looked at the canal and wondered if you could actually drink it? In this video, we're tackling that exact question by planning and designing the ultimate water purification system to turn murky canal water into safe, crystal-clear drinking water right on my narrowboat. We break down the science behind a complete filtration and sterilisation process. We're going way beyond a simple camping filter to design a robust system that can handle everything from silt and algae to invisible chemical contaminants, bacteria, and viruses. It’s the longest day of the year this week! We’ve been living aboard our wide beam canal boat for five months now. While Jamie’s still waiting for autumn, for Liz nothing beats a British summer; you feel it everywhere, in the light, in the trees, in the birdsong, and in the wildlife. When asked what we missed most while living abroad, “the seasons” was always close behind family, friends and pubs! 00:00 Intro 00:35 Tropical seasons vs temperate 01:12 Three seasons on the canals so far 01:33 Summer in Great Britain 01:52 Insects of the summer 02:22 Garden spider weaving its web 02:55 Flowers of the summer 03:48 Bumble bees 04:15 Is it getting hotter? 05:04 How the weather is affecting the canals 06:08 Feeding ducks! 06:43 Clothes storage on a widebeam 07:19 Fujifilm XE2 photo montage 08:04 Painting the dog box hatch 13:50 Liz is writing a book! 15:43 Marley the dog in slow motion Support our work 🎞️ https://followtheboat.com/pub/ 😊 LET'S CONNECT! https://discord.gg/WGtsJubdkE https://www.facebook.com/followtheboat/ https://www.instagram.com/followtheboat/ 📷Jamie's Photography - https://jamiefurlong.com 🌻 https://youtu.be/jZkk4ZiFPeI 🐾 https://youtu.be/9574XmkhnbE Thank you for watching! While hunkered down on the canal in wind and rain, we look back at life aboard our #sailboat compared to life now. There are similarities, not least the weather (yep, even on a canal boat you have to be mindful of the winds). But what about planning? How far ahead do you need to think when cruising the waterways of the UK? Thanks to you, it's our 400th episode! 🙏🎉 Our videos would not be possible without your support. Ever sped past a quiet town like Thorne on the motorway, oblivious to the incredible secrets it holds? We uncover layers of forgotten history, from a crucial boat-building legacy just yards from our Staniland Marina mooring, to the remains of a medieval motte and bailey castle and a 900-year-old church. This isn't just canal history; it's a hidden slice of England's past. Thorne's allure continues with a venture into the stunning Thorne Community Woods, a sprawling 79-acre haven of trees and meadows beside the canal. It's perfect for a dog walk, but we're taking it a step further with our first foraging adventure. What did we find, and more importantly, what did it taste like? Find out in the video… We're committed to sharing these unique stories independently, with no sponsors or collaborators, so we rely on kind contributions from our amazing community of viewers to make each new exploration possible. One of the last places you'll find genuine freedom in the UK is off-grid mooring on the canals and rivers. And if you choose a secluded spot like the winding hole on the Keadby and Stainforth canal, you can escape the rat-race and slow down to immerse yourself in nature. With huge thanks to Vanessa of the @themindfulnarrowboat who we met the other day and who encouraged us to enjoy the waterways here and to keep learning about nature. We had already edited this post, but after chatting to Vanessa hope to learn as we go, and continue to record what we see in our videos.
