We are now in the latter half of August and it is time to plan our departure from Ireland before the winter gales commence. But the storms come early. On the night of August 19 storm Ellen comes crashing into the south coast of Ireland, packing winds near hurricane force. Then five days later comes storm Francis. Finally, on September 4, a decent weather window opens up for a southbound sailing craft to cross the Bay of Biscay, and I do not waste it.
