Shakedowns and Overnight sail to Melilla - Ep 71

Pre season we always wash and check our sails and rigging, so we pick a calm early morning to start work. Paul check all the shackles, metal or Dynema, cleans and services the Furlex, winches and jammers etc. Just prior to us departing for Melilla, to reset our UK paid Vat, our bow thruster decided to act up. Last year we had issues and changed the batteries, which we thought resolved the problem. But no, the real issue was, we know now, the solenoid. He had to wait for a few days for a new one, and Paul promptly installed it. As soon as everything was fixed and ready, we set out for a "Shack Down Sail". We always go out for a short local trip to check everything is good. Once we're happy with that, and the wind in is our favor we set off for Melilla. I really suffered from rather bad sea sickness on this trip. I don't normal get sea sick, so it was a struggle. Melilla is a an autonomous city of Spain on the North African cost. It lies on the eastern side of the Cape Three Forks, bordering Morocco, facing the Mediterranean Sea. Melilla was a Phoenician and later Punic trade establishment. After Cathage's defeat in the Punic Wars, the city fell under the control of the Roman client state Mauretania, & was later made a Roman colony in AD46, sometimes being referred as Flavia. By 1860 Melilla's population only amount to 375 inhabitants. Following its declaration as a free port in 1863, the population increased over time, to the 86,000 inhabitants it has recorded in 2018.
