We set off from Cala Sant Miquel, Ibiza, to intend on going to the south of the island to meet friends. But we felt the atmosphere building, storms a coming, so we continued back west to Cartagena. Our lovely friends from Cartagena, Natalie and Dazzer, did a surprise visit turning up with their boat Libati. We hung out with them, and the crew of Pink Penguin, quite a lot. Whilst having jollies with our friends, some other friends from Cartagena were anchored off the coast of Sicily when Mount Etna erupted. The water plane gave us a good show, landing on the sea and collecting sea water, to then fly off again, no doubt to drop the water where needed. I swam and snorkelled every day and was blessed with the beautiful sea life Onboard Libati and off out out for Dazzers birthday And back onboard Libati again. Natalie had to go back to the UK for a week, so we had to keep Dazzer company. We all had a dreadful time This is a fine example of anchoring, not. The grass or Pasadena is protected in the islands and anchoring in it is forbidden and fined if caught. But some people just don't seem to care. This is our anchor and chain, on sand. Every now and then we need to dive with a scuba gear and clean the hull. And whilst diving we were really lucky to have this guy come and help distract us. He stayed with us for ages, literally circling around us as we filmed, as if to check us out. After we did all the necessary paperwork to reset Crazy Ivan's UK paid VAT, we set off, with the intentions of heading straight to Ibiza, as the forecasted winds would take us straight there. How wrong were we. We get out, away from the African coast, and nope, the wind didn't take us to the Balearics, in fact there was little to no wind and we ended up motoring for 30 hrs back to the mainland. So we headed for Cartagena, to refuel, resupply and rest. Once the winds looked promising, we headed off back out towards Ibiza, and we have a fantastic downwind sail the whole way there, arriving early hours in Cala Bassa. After a few days, we set off for Mallorca, with our main intention on getting to Sardinia and Sicily. Again, we had a lovely overnight sail to Mallorca and arrived Santa Ponca in the early hours. Whilst in SP we met up with Cartagena friends Barbara and Wolfe of Pink Penguin, and went out for meals, hikes and drinks etc. During our prolonged stayed in SP, due to the exceptionally erratic weather this year, Paul did various below the waterline maintenance jobs, like changing anodes and cleaning the hull. Pre season we always wash and check our sails and rigging, so we pick a calm early morning to start work. Paul check all the shackles, metal or Dynema, cleans and services the Furlex, winches and jammers etc. Just prior to us departing for Melilla, to reset our UK paid Vat, our bow thruster decided to act up. Last year we had issues and changed the batteries, which we thought resolved the problem. But no, the real issue was, we know now, the solenoid. He had to wait for a few days for a new one, and Paul promptly installed it. As soon as everything was fixed and ready, we set out for a "Shack Down Sail". We always go out for a short local trip to check everything is good. Once we're happy with that, and the wind in is our favor we set off for Melilla. I really suffered from rather bad sea sickness on this trip. I don't normal get sea sick, so it was a struggle. Melilla is a an autonomous city of Spain on the North African cost. It lies on the eastern side of the Cape Three Forks, bordering Morocco, facing the Mediterranean Sea. Melilla was a Phoenician and later Punic trade establishment. After Cathage's defeat in the Punic Wars, the city fell under the control of the Roman client state Mauretania, & was later made a Roman colony in AD46, sometimes being referred as Flavia. By 1860 Melilla's population only amount to 375 inhabitants. Following its declaration as a free port in 1863, the population increased over time, to the 86,000 inhabitants it has recorded in 2018. For many years Paul has wanted to get a bass guitar - he used to play when he was a teenager. So for a birthday present, we bought him one. And the jamming with friends, and strangers, didn't take long. Sørlandet came into the marina for a few days, and we got to go aboard and explore. Every year in the Autumn, Cartagena hosts a historical horse and carriage show. It was amazing seeing the beautiful horses and carriages and their owners dressed in period costumes. Whilst on anchor in Santa Ponca and I was still recovering from my week long hospitalisation, an forecasted storm hit us. The lifeguards on the beach recorded 120kph wind speeds. In total the squal lasted about 2 hours. There were boats dragging, some ended up on the beach, some on rocks, and there were even dinghys in the trees behind the beach. It was insane and very scary. We visited the Jardines de Alfabia in the Tramuntana Mountain Range. Its a peaceful place to visit with a lot of history. Then back on the road we went to Puig Major, the highest peak in Mallorca at 1,436m. When back on the boat we had a days where the swell came in and we rolled!! A Lot!! We had our friends from Lazy Frog Sailing visit us a couple of times for drinks, nibbles and cocktail making. After last episode and spending time in hospital in Ibiza, we decided to stay a while in Santa Ponça, whilst I recovered properly. So we spent time swimming, meeting with friends on Lazy Frog Sailing and generally relaxing. We took the bus into Palma and we meet Steve and Judy on Sailing Fair Isle. After a couple of weeks we rented a car and drove inland to see various sites. Cartagena in June ?? biblical rain. And whilst we wait for our NIE cards, Cartagena keeps us entertained. The military put on displays. We went aboard a Minehunter the M31 Segura. The L51 Galicia landing platform ship docked at Cartagena for a few day and I watched as it launched and set off on another mission Then finally after our new NIE cards arrived our water maker decided to play up. The pressure sensor value failed. So we had to continue to wait in Cartagena until that arrived. Once fitted??we set off. But that was not an easy sail. We intended to go straight to Mallorca and then onto Sicily, but about 10 hours on route, after leaving the mainland, Krissy became very unwell. Extremely ill even. We had to divert to Ibiza and she was taken to hospital by ambulance. She stayed for a week in hospital on a surgical ward. Once she was discharged from hospital she was desperate for a good meal. We stayed close to San Antonio for a day or so in Cala Bassa. Once we were confident Krissy was going to be ok, we sailed onto to Mallorca to Santa Ponça. Whilst we were there we took a bus to Port Andratx to look around. We met great friends from Lazy Frog.
