Welcome back to Navel Gazing at Camp David. This week we are heading back over to the African continent and the Royal Cape yards in Durban South Africa for a look at their flag ship… The Royal Cape Majestic 570 Fly! Today we will, 1. Review its specifications, pricing and layout against three similar new vessels. 2. Do a full tour asking, "What would Sylvia say?" 3. Naval Gaze at an innovation and/or adjustment that might make life aboard easier 4. Have a look at the used market for 3–5-year-old comparables. 5. And finally give it a "Dave Score" and compare the result with all our previously reviewed yachts. All this fun will be sandwiched between a pairing of wine and a work of art from the same region as the guest yacht, in an effort to capture the culture and people who gave birth to these wonderful vessels. Waves, wine, art, and ideas…What a great way to spend thirty minutes, so let's get going. From high above Vancouver, we head east across the continent and the Atlantic to the West of France and the home of last week's guest yacht in Rochefort at the Yards of Nautitech. Heading all the way down the European continent and further south east down the African continent, we arrive at the home of this week's guest yacht at the Durban yards of Royal Cape Catamarans in South Africa. Finally we hop south west the stunning Stellenbosch wine region near Cape Town and the home of this week's wine pairing, Rascallion Pandiculation Shiraz blend 2020 Pandiculation is a blend of 88% Shiraz and 12% Grenache Noir. Fruit for this blend was carefully selected from two younger blocks of vineyards on North facing slopes and elevation of 170-210m, chosen for their soft ripened fruit and tannins. The Shiraz grapes ripened in deep Hutton and Clovelly soils which is granite derived and have a high gravel content ensuring balanced growth and fruit that ripened at lower sugar levels. The Grenache was planted in 2008 on northwest facing slopes, producing smaller bunches with intense flavours. Efficient canopy management practices such as suckering, and tipping ensured sufficient sunlight penetrated them canopy. Both parcels of grapes ripened with a natural high acidity and lower pH level. The grapes were handpicked in late February, very early in the morning, which allowed for the grapes to be delivered cold to the cellar where they were hand sorted, some de-stemmed and lightly crushed and others whole bunch fermented. The two cultivars were vinified separately. Fermentation took place in open fermenters for the Shiraz and a closed fermenter for the Grenache. After a short maceration period of 7 days after primary fermentation for the Shiraz, and 3 days for the Grenache, both wines were matured for 18 months in old 300L French oak barrels. Malo-lactic fermentation took place in Stainless Steel tanks. The wines were blended prior to bottling. The result is a powerful aromatic wine showing flavours of pepper, plums and liquorice. The palate weight is medium bodied and start fresh following through into a soft balance of sweet- sour prunes and black cherries. Innovation Corner • Royal Cape Majestic 570 Fly : https://royalcapecatamarans.com Garmin SURROUND VIEW CAMERA SYSTEM We have them on our cars, vans and motorhomes, so it seems quite reasonable to have this latest technology installed on our motorboats and sailing yachts. Garmin has introduced the marine industry' first fully integrated system of cameras to offer a bird's-eye view for a full 360-degree observation. The system utilises a six-camera array for full situational awareness using augmented reality (graphic overlays) to offer the skipper or captain distance markers and a visual bumper which can be pre-set to assist with docking or to monitor external objects. SEAMLESS SITUATIONAL AWARENESS The 360-degree video feed integrates with compatible Garmin chartplotters or MFD helm displays. Each camera view can also be monitored individually. VISUAL BUMPER A visual bumper feature helps the captain see when docks, piers or other objects breach preset barrier limits around the boat. DISTANCE MARKERS In tight manoeuvring situations, distance markers around the boat provide visual cues to help maintain safe clearance and separation. ENGINEERED FOR LOW MAINTENANCE Thru-hull OEM installation offers secure fit and calibration of the Surround View Camera System. For easy maintenance, any of the cameras can be replaced externally. Art of The Region For our art of the region pairing today we are enjoying MAKIWA MUTOMBA, Children In a Red Boat
