Can you sail the world in an Open 60? ONE YEAR of NEVER BEFORE SEEN footage in 30 MINS
Hello and welcome to Sailing NV, we're Timo & Jo, and after spending most of our lives sailing around the world, 4 and a half years ago we made the unusual decision to buy an Open 66 to continue our circumnavigation with, together with our son Captain Nemo and puppy Solo. After a 2 year refit in Fiji, we set off at the beginning of 2023 and headed west to Vanuatu and then Indonesia. If you look back to our cruising videos, we'd made it to the Komodo National Park in Flores later that same yet. From here we cruised in Indonesia for more than a year before finally sailing up to Borneo to haul the boat out, due to gearbox issues. So in this video, we're going to show you a summary of the years worth of cruising we missed out on showing you? We had to learn how to navigate the crazy Komodo currents and what to do if we encountered the infamous Komodo dragon in the wild. These Fierce lizards ooze venom into their bites, weakening and ultimately killing their prey. Luckily our captain is a trained dragon killer. Many of the places we visited weren't well-charted, with depths on the maps often proving inaccurate. But we developed our strategy for sounding out the areas ourselves, using satellite imagery which especially helpful in the reef areas and over time, we gained confidence in finding the perfect anchorages, even with our complex draft! We even ventured inside an atoll, probably our favourite spot in the National Park, a protected anchorage surrounded by a skinny strip of reef that dries out at low tide, and involved navigating through a narrow reef pass to get in and out. One of our favourite things about this anchorage aside from the crystal clear water was taking the dinghy to a manta ray cleaning station. After more than a month spent exploring the Komodo National Park, a very unique part of the world, we continued westwards to Bali, stopping off along the northern coastline of Sumbawa and Lombok along the way and stumbled upon a village building giant wooden boats on the beach. Despite the relatively lack of wind in this part of the world, we found we were often able to keep NV moving at a good 5 knots with only a minimum amount of breeze, due to her being so light weight (only around 10 tonnes). This also gave us plenty of opportunities to fly our gennakers. We made it to Bali finally around December 2023, where we were immersed in culture and traffic only to find rainy season had arrived, so we took the opportunity to fly home for Christmas for the first time in more than 10 years for Timo, and left NV tied to 2 moorings in Serangen harbour with some friends onboard to take care of Solo. We returned after a wonderful 6 week break, to find the boat practically attached to the ground from algae. Along with barnacle scraping we had some decisions to make when we got back to the boat that year in terms of our route planning. The original plan was to cross the Indian Ocean, and we realised we were too late to make it via the northern route and instead our best option was to start from the Lombok/Bali area any time between April - September. This left us with a relaxed few months ahead to cruise slowly the surrounding area, our favourite spots being the South west 'secret Gilies and the north west Gilies in Lombok. In May all our plans changed when we found out I was pregnant again, with the baby due mid Jan 2025, which was bad timing for rounding the Cape of Good Hope! Our gearbox issues had also been slowly been getting worse and worse, so we decided to take the time instead to find somewhere to haul the boat out and postpone our Indian Ocean crossing until next year. So instead we enjoyed some family time and when Timo's daughters Nami & Tea came to visit for the summer, and we took them back to the Komodo National Park! Nami & Tea were born aboard Timo's previous boat and spent the first part of their lives sailing across the Pacific. A great big thank you to all the wonderful crew that joined us at some point over this last year, we hope to see you back onboard again soon :) So for anyone out there that thought it's not possible to cruise with a racing boat, we hope that this video has proved otherwise, and coming up soon is another video full of the problems we had this year ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you'd like to support us on Patreon, our website https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv or if you'd like to help us buy something we need, you can check out our amazon wish list https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1G2NJ0EGJLKR0?ref_=wl_share THANK YOU!!!
