2019 49er World Championships - Medal Race

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (New Zealand) win their fifth 49er World Championship title on home water in Auckland - but not without drama. A broken tiller extension forced the Olympic champions out of the morning race, and they came into this Medal Race defending a lead over Germany's Erik Heil and Thomas Ploessel, who had clawed their way back into contention after a costly slump earlier in the week. Burling and Tuke finished fourth in the Medal Race itself, just enough to hold on for gold. Heil and Ploessel take silver, with Great Britain's Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell claiming bronze. Burling and Tuke went on to win 49er silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and now race together for New Zealand SailGP. Heil is also now on SailGP's Germany team.
