Money and Lifestyle are probably the two biggest factors that draw people to the yacht brokerage industry. The lifestyle is very easy to achieve once you are on the inside, since cocktail parties and yacht hops are a regular part of the brokerage agenda. The money is far harder to come by though, and this chapter will explain how brokers are paid, and just how much you should expect to make.

It's not unusual for these people to already be in the yachting industry, such as yacht Captains, managers, and insurance agents. It goes without saying that this group of individuals could be just one short step away from becoming yacht brokers IF they apply a suitable strategy. Once again, it is useful to remember the requisites that a brokerage company looks for in a broker: relevant connections your knowledge of yachts and the yachting industry a proven ability to network successful experience in sales I have to assume that a career builder looking to move into yacht brokerage has at least 3 of these 4, but even with solid professional experience it is not always easy to enter into the brokerage field. Transparency is the key to lasting success. If you have a buyer who is looking to buy a yacht, that does not make you a yacht broker, so don't present yourself as one. The buyer will not respect you for it, the seller will not respect you for it, and you will build resentment amongst the yacht brokerage community. There are two sides of yacht brokerage: - Representing the Seller - Representing the Buyer There are two ways of going about working on your first deal. The easy way, and the hard way. The easy way involves having a degree of trust in another broker. Offer to introduce your client to a broker, but with the written understanding that the introduction is to enable you to learn the industry and with the eventual goal of becoming a broker yourself. If you can avoid it, don't ask a yacht broker unless you have an excellent relationship with him. Ask the owner of the brokerage or the CEO and insist that the arrangement is put into writing. He will then assign a broker to work with you. Understand the difference between a broker and a brokerage: A broker is not interested in your connections, how much you know about yachts, your ability to network, or your experience in sales. You represent competition to him...even if you work for the same company. A brokerage company owner or CEO on the other hand needs to find new brokers with fresh connections and a fresh approach. They will most likely appreciate your honest, transparent, and fresh approach and will instruct one of their brokers to work with you. In any case, whether you decide to work with a broker or a brokerage company, make sure that you have a written understanding.

The harsh reality is that even the highest of academic qualifications is seldom sufficient to open the doors of a yacht brokerage, gifting you with an automatic position as even a junior broker. The most important assets that a brokerage house looks for are: - relevant connections - your knowledge of yachts and the yachting industry - a proven ability to network - successful experience in sales Depending on how effective you are at developing the above criteria, it can take years to gain sufficient connections, industry knowledge, and sales ability to satisfy the requirements of a brokerage house. Consider this as your apprenticeship period. With this in mind, from the moment you land in your yachting destination it is advisable to start to build your yacht brokerage assets. How can you do that? One of the most popular methods of getting into the yachting industry for young people is to work as crew on a yacht. There are some significant advantages to this approach. The entire yachting industry centres around one thing only, and that is the yacht. Yacht owners come to their yacht, yacht builders visit yachts, yacht brokers, suppliers, yacht crew, just about everybody. By working on a yacht you will have positioned yourself at the very heart of the industry so that people will come to you without you having to go to them. It is a wonderful place to pick up market intelligence, you get to know people, but above all you start to become known. Who knows you, is every bit as important as who you know. When the day arrives that you want to present yourself for the position of yacht broker in an organisation the question will be asked "does anybody know this person?", and "Ive never heard of him is the worst possible reply. Please note: Ironically, you DO increasingly need qualifications to become a crew member on a yacht - but it's a lot easier to get those than it is to walk into a brokerage and get offered a position. Working as crew is not the only way to get into the inner sanctum of the yachting industry though, you may be amazed at how many businesses exist that serve the yachting industry. To get your foot on the first rung that leads to a career as a yacht broker may take a little humility, and the ability to accept a role that you consider yourself to be overqualified for. Sometimes you have to take one step backwards in order to take ten steps forward! There is absolutely no shame in offering your services to a company who cleans carpets on yachts for example - you'll meet yacht Captains yacht crew, get on board some amazing yachts and start to make connections and start to make a name for yourself in the industry. Here are a list of some businesses you could approach: - Crew Uniform suppliers - Yacht Toiletry suppliers - Engine and generator service centres - Water Toy suppliers (jet skis, tenders, etc) - Teak deck repair and replacement specialists - Yacht audio video specialists - Yacht carpet cleaners - Yacht Food suppliers - Yacht Concierge services - Yacht Video and Photography services - Yacht repair and refit yards - Yacht builders - Producers of yacht name plates - Lighting specialists - Hull and superstructure painting companies - Interior designers The point of the above is that you need to recognise what you can offer these companies, whether that be handling their social media accounts, scouting out new business, processing data, or simply being the company gofer...and then apply yourself to impressing not just the company but also the clients. Build your connections. Make a name for yourself.
It is almost impossible to get work as a yacht broker if you do not live in an area where yachts are located. There are a few exceptions to this, such as Zurich and London, but if you are serious about becoming a yacht broker the very best thing...and the FIRST thing you should do is move to an area where there are plenty of yachts. Here are a few suggestions: - South Florida, especially Fort Lauderdale. - The Balearic Islands, especially Mallorca and it's capital Palma. - The South of France, especially Monaco and Antibes - San Remo, Italy. - Newport, Rhode Island - San Diego, California, - Sydney, Australia - Phuket - Hong Kong Of course, one thing that all those places have in common is that they are extremely expensive to live in. This may be a challenge for you, so be aware of the many budget options for board and lodging that are at your disposal. Here are five great tips that could make your move more affordable: - Check out www.yachting-pages.com and use their website search engine to look for "crew houses". Crew often require reasonably priced accommodation for varying periods of time, so looking for a crew house will not only allow you to control your costs but also help you get started by meeting the right people. - Don't get drawn in to the drink culture of yachties in the area that you move to. Yacht crew often have a considerable amount of expendable income and few if any overheads, so spending a hundred dollars on a night out is no big deal to them. If you have moved to a yachting area with the purpose of becoming a yacht broker then it is smarter to play the long game. It may take you a while to become financially stable, so save your money for rent and you can enjoy a celebratory Dom Perignon in style when you sell your first yacht! - Don't be afraid to ask people you meet for cheap options for food and lodging. Just because somebody works in the yachting industry does not mean that they are any more wealthy than you. I spent two years working in and around Monaco and learned all of the most economic places to eat, from buying sandwiches at the Casino supermarket by the port to a little pizza place on Boulevard d'Italie (where I once bumped into Jenson Button and his girlfriend). Many, many people in the yachting industry have to work to a very tight budget whilst giving an impression of being very successful....so always ask! - Join local facebook groups in the area that you decide to move to. Antibes, for example, has a wonderful group called "Antibes Buy it Sell it Rent it". There are often well priced opportunities for accommodation advertised, and once accepted as a member you could also post with your requirements. Almost every area in the world where there is a yachting community will also have a facebook group similar to this, and whilst the yachties who have "made it" can be difficult and unhelpful sometimes, the folk who are working their way into the industry tend to be tremendously supportive to each other. - Find a broker buddy. Actually, I only used "broker" buddy because it started with the letter "b". It doesn't matter what your "buddy's" ambitions are, the important thing is to find somebody that you can get on with to share expenses. Sharing an apartment is so much cheaper than renting one on your own, and if you are both looking out for each other's interests it is far better to have four ears to the ground rather than just two. Before you even set foot outside your front door on the way to the yachting destination of your choice, it would be wise to take a good look in the mirror and to ask yourself "who would want to give me a job?" Be realistic about it. How old are you? How long have you been in your current employment? What work skills and life skills have you accumulated so far, and how can these be put to good use? In my experience there are three categories of people who enquire about becoming a yacht broker. It is important to know who you are in order to build a successful strategy to achieving your goal and avoiding disappointment. Be prepared to work out your apprenticeship though, the best things in life seldom come without a price! So who are you? 1. The complete starter? 2. The dissatisfied worker? 3. The career builder?
