In the medium wind, you need to get the boat moving forward before accelerating. It is not easy to accelerate from a dead stop. In order to get the boat going, it's the orientation to the wind should be closer to perpendicular, but no lower than a close reach. The trick is arriving there without sliding sideways which is using a combination of the sculling and easing sheet. You are permitted by #rule42 to scull to close-hauled then you must sail the rest of the way. You begin acceleration from below close-hauled because it is more perpendicular to the wind and allows the foils to grip properly. Also, the process of adding weight and heading up optimizes the speed in which you arrive at full speed. We consider the acceleration to be one of the most important fundamentals in our sport as it teaches control that can be applied to every aspect of boat handling and speed You might notice several other nuances in the video. Living in a Trinidad shipyard for over a year many of the friends we've made either work in the area or are into boating or sailing. One Trini friend was heading out for a lime DDI and kindly invited us to come along - our final destination was my favourite getaway, Chacachacare! He has a small monohull sailboat that's great for Caribbean island hopping. With our catamaran having been stuck on land for over 14 months undergoing warranty repairs it felt so good to get out on the water, put a sail up and go where the wind takes us!
