After months of island-hopping across the Mediterranean, our Lagoon 440 Kaia has finally brought us to Sardinia – and the pace of life here instantly feels different. We’ve sailed close to 1,000 nautical miles this season, from Spain’s mainland to the Balearics, and our recent crossing to Sardinia was our longest and most magical passage yet. This week, we drop the sails and take time to soak in Sardinia’s wilder side. Under a gentle breeze, we make a short sail down the coast to the peaceful anchorage of Punta de S’Achivoni, where we celebrate Vika’s birthday surrounded by calm seas, turquoise water, and our three salty dogs. From there, we follow the eastern coastline past deserted beaches and rugged mountain backdrops, before stepping ashore in the quaint town of Portoscuso – our final stop together before Vika heads off to Ibiza. Next episode, it’s just Sam at the helm for his very first solo sail, taking Kaia and the dogs toward the southern tip of Sardinia – tackling the challenges of single-handed sailing for the first time. Life to leeward can be wet and wild for the Jib Trimmer. Eyes ahead and up is the only way to roll to keep the sail shape right. The waves were short and sharp on the way out of Strangford Lough as the J109 GTR bounces over the bar on it way to victory in the 2024 Ardglass Race. YT-Episode 8 - It’s not all sunsets 🌅 and fair winds 🌬️ We were lucky enough to find the last place in a marina as a Mistral storm came down from France and across the Balearic Islands/Sardinia. 65 knots (74 mph) of wind was reported by those out at Sea. We saw 45 knots (51 mph) on the North East coast of Mallorca. Being moored up in a marina we were relatively comfortable and very thankful to have not been at anchor or on the water. We had 6 lines on, snapped one line and will probably have to replace a couple of others due to chaffing on the rusted bollards, but we are all safe and sound.
