Little is known about this iconic, massive gathering of giant spider #crabs (Leptomithrax gaimardii) in Port Phillip Bay, #australia Very few studies have been published on this phenomenon and these Australian natives in general, leaving many questions unanswered to why they gather, how many there are, and how they live their lives. Scientists have observed crabs molting during this aggregation and suggest that they do so in such large numbers to help protect them when they are soft and vulnerable to predators after a molt. To better understand them, scientists started a citizen science project called, Spider Crab Watch. If you see a giant spider crab you can document your sighting, adding it to a live database. We've been told that this well-stocked Grocery in George Town Exumas is largely due, in part, by the effort of the Bahamas to make cruisers feel welcome here. Well, whatever the reason, this is one of the better stocked groceries in all of the Bahamas (that we've found)...Perhaps third to only New Providence and Spanish Wells. Thank you, George Town!
