Little is known about this iconic, massive gathering of giant spider #crabs (Leptomithrax gaimardii) in Port Phillip Bay, #australia Very few studies have been published on this phenomenon and these Australian natives in general, leaving many questions unanswered to why they gather, how many there are, and how they live their lives. Scientists have observed crabs molting during this aggregation and suggest that they do so in such large numbers to help protect them when they are soft and vulnerable to predators after a molt. To better understand them, scientists started a citizen science project called, Spider Crab Watch. If you see a giant spider crab you can document your sighting, adding it to a live database. You can also help build out this database from land by classifying some of the thousands of images they have taken. #marinebiology #science #sciencefacts #ocean #citizenscience #waterlust #ecology

Manta encounter at Manta Alley in Komodo National Park. It's a bit of a giveaway from the name of the site, but this signature dive is the main location in Komodo to find manta rays - often as many as 10 or 20. It's a rock islet that just punctures the sea's surface in a small craggy chain, inside the bay along the south coast of Komodo Island.

Tara Pacheco and Berta Betanzos (ESP) won the Women's 470 World Championship at the 2011 ISAF Worlds and subsequently qualified their nation to the London 2012 Olympic Sailing competition. The pair will be one of the favourites to take Olympic gold and Pacheco is looking forward to the Olympics.
