► Discover our full article on our website: https://www.multihulls-world.com/news-catamaran-trimaran/arc-2024-almost-3000-nautical-miles-ahead-of-them ► The success of blue water cruising rallies is undeniable, and in this field, the World Cruising Club hosts the biggest, with no fewer than 234 yachts registered for the ARC+ and the ARC combined. We were in Las Palmas for the start of the ARC. The first thing we noticed on the marina pontoons was the growing number of multihulls: there were 33 in 2021, 37 in 2022, 44 last year and 45 this year, out of the 140 boats registered for the start. This brings the number of two and three-hulled yachts taking part to 32% - compared with 28% in 2023, when 156 yachts were entered. The most represented multihull brand this year is Fountaine Pajot with 8 examples, followed by Outremer and Lagoon - with 7 and 5 catamarans respectively. More generally, these transatlantic rallies are always well attended, even if the edition we’re following this year shows a slight decline in favor of the ARC+. Launched in 2013, this rally leaves Las Palmas two weeks ahead of the ARC and includes a stopover in Cape Verde, which seems to be very popular before reaching Granada. The “traditional” ARC, meanwhile, is celebrating its 39th edition and has always set off from Las Palmas. The finish line is in Rodney Bay, Saint Lucia. It’s interesting to note that the format proposed by the organizers, which incorporates safety checks, training modules and comprehensive checks, has become even safer with the advent of satellite internet – thanks to Starlink. Crews with little or no experience of ocean sailing, of which there are now quite a large number, can benefit from assistance that would have been unimaginable just a couple of years ago... In port, the last three days were devoted to final preparations for the multihulls and, of course, victualing - fresh supplies are only taken on board the day before. This is also the day for cleaning fruit with water - it is then hung in well-ventilated nets. Sunday November 24: only a few clouds on the sky and an absence of wind... a trickle of south-easterly air decided to settle over the start line. The whole multihull fleet was ready to set out across the Atlantic, with the exception of one of the Outremer 55s, which had a few technical issues - fortunately, it was able to be hauled out thanks to the brand-new 850-ton travelift, inaugurated just a week previously. At the start, it was Mark and Penny Belcher’s Lagoon 400 Two Hoots (UK) that crossed the line first, followed by Kenneth Frantz’s Elba 45 My Cherie Amour (USA) and Francesco Rongoni’s Neel 47 trimaran Ferdinand (FR). Then, as if by magic, the wind shifted to the northeast and began to strengthen: the trade winds at last! By far this is the best road trip we have ever done. We loved it so much we did it again. Many of the people that visit New Zealand often road trip around the South Island but I'm a firm believer that the North Island is just as beautiful, with the East Coast being just one example. We first did this trip in July 2022 and then again in September 2023 after Cyclone Gabrielle. The second time took longer to drive due to the extensive road works caused by the catastrophic damage from Cyclone Gabrielle so care was needed. Words cannot describe how beautiful this coastline is.

Ieri ci siamo lasciati con la promessa di fare chiarezza sui turni di notte. Bene. A differenza delle due traversate oceaniche, non abbiamo ragionato a coppie, ma a singolo individuo. Ognuno sta al timone 1h 30’. Poi la restante 1h 30’ resta fuori a disposizione di quello che viene dopo al timone. Dopo questa ora e mezza uno va a dormire e quello che è stato al timone prende io suo posto come eventuale aiuto. E così via per tutta la notte. Alla fine i turni sono da 3 ore e ne riposiamo 4 e mezzo. Non è male. La giornata di oggi si è sviluppata senza grandi eventi. Abbiamo navigato, chiacchierato, riposato, lavorato. Verso sera, passiamo accanto a una secca. Pensate che il fondale passa da 1500m a 16m. È praticamente una montagna sommersa. Solitamente le secche sono casa di pesciotti, così buttiamo le lenze in acqua e incrociamo le dita. Come immaginavamo, abbocca un tonno FORTISSIMO. Non ho mai fatto così fatica a tirare su un pesce. Saremo stati a tirare e mollare per più di 30 minuti. Alla fine abbiamo tirato su un tonno pinna gialla. Il peso? Non lo so, ma con un braccio solo non riuscivo a tenerlo alto. DISCLAIMER PESCA: mi piace pescare, Andre lo detesta. Entrambi amiamo gli animali e non ci piace spettacolarizzare la sofferenza o la morte. Il pesce che peschiamo lo mangiamo (anzi a volte lo mangio solo io) e tanti saluti. Non ci interessa pubblicare foto in posa, ma tenere traccia sul diario di bordo dell’evento. A domani! C.
