Llamaremos virar a la acción de variar el lado de entrada del viento maniobrando velas y timón hasta cambiarlo de banda. Se llama virar por avante cuando orzamos con el timón hasta pasar el viento por la proa, también podemos virar en redondo (trasluchar) cuando cambiamos el viento arribando hasta pasarlo por la popa. Es una maniobra que, llevada a cabo en equipo, con suavidad, seguridad y precisión, consigues cambiar de rumbo y hacer que el barco no se pare.
