The magic below the surface — here’s what’s actually in it. We shot everything in this film on snorkel and breath-hold in East Indonesia. No tanks, no certification, no decompression tables. Just a mask, a pair of fins, and the patience to stay still. These waters sit inside the Coral Triangle, the region holding the greatest marine biodiversity on Earth. It has more coral species, more reef fish species, and more relationships between them than anywhere else. Strong currents moving between islands carry nutrients onto the reefs, which is why the fish aggregate in the numbers you see here. Much of it also sits in water shallow enough to snorkel. That’s the part most travellers don’t expect. The reefs in this film are reachable from the surface, so you don’t need a diving qualification to see them—you do need clear water and someone who knows where to stop the ship. None of it is guaranteed. Dolphins come when they come. Whale sharks are unpredictable. We can promise time in the right water with people who know how to read it, and the good sense to stay quiet and let the animals decide. The more you understand a reef, the more you see.
