Si utilizza sulla parte immersa dello scafo e talvolta anche in installazioni fisse in mare (piattaforme, boe, etc.). Esistono molte diverse qualità di v.a., le più efficienti sono dette "autoleviganti" perché navigando gradualmente si polverizzano, staccandosi dallo scafo e lasciandolo pulito.
