Later, following Japanese maritime custom, we burned the charms and sacred items marine shrines had given her over the years—honoring her former name and life while formally marking the start of a new chapter. Wahine was my home and vessel of adventure. Now, as Wahine 8, she begins her transformation into a research and education vessel, preparing to cross the Pacific along the Turtle Highway from Japan to Mexico. Goodbye, Wahine.
