After a long winter spent preparing for the 2019 52 SUPER SERIES season, the opening event in Mahón, Menorca will provide the first indication as to this season’s pecking order. Unlike the flood of new boats that were launched for 2018, this season sees a variety of tweaks and changes across the fleet as teams strive towards gaining an edge in an already highly refined and ultra competitive fleet. Among the changes, several teams with Botin designed boats have replaced their keel bulbs in a bid to improve performance. But teams themselves have also changed, most notably that of last year’s decisive champions Quantum Racing who have a number of key personnel changes. And then there is Vladimir Liubomirov’s Bronenosec Gazprom team, back after sitting out the 2018 circuit but now back with a brand new boat stacked with talent. So be it team changes, boat tweaks or new builds, there are plenty of new variables thrown into the mix for the start of the 5 event 2019 season. Racing started on 21st May. The Crazy Waters Bridge in Chalkis sits at the narrowest point between Evia and the mainland, where the strait is only about 38 meters wide. Because so much water is forced through this tiny opening, extremely strong currents are created — the reason sailors call it the “Crazy Waters.” The bridge is in the middle of the city and opens only once a day to avoid disrupting the constant road traffic. Boats may only pass at slack tide, the brief moment every six hours when the water is calmest. That’s why sailors often go through at strange times like 1:30 or 3:00 a.m. While waiting, boats are not allowed to tie up along the quay because the turbulence is so strong that it would be dangerous. Instead, everyone must anchor in the bay and wait for instructions from Port Control. We anchored there with about fifteen other boats and waited until slack tide at night. At midnight, Port Control suddenly called all boats in order — we were number three. Passing the bridge in the dark was surreal: strong currents below, quiet city lights above. The bridge didn’t lift; it actually slid sideways into the quay walls, disappearing completely. Once through, we moored safely just 100 meters further in the city. Experiencing this natural phenomenon at night, in such a narrow and powerful channel, was something I will not quickly forget!
The J109 is at the start of the regatta, positioned perfectly for a great start. It was a great day for sailing with the sun shining and close racing between all the boats, all hoping to take the win. The team at bottom up boats hope you are enjoying the short clips from the 2025 racing season.
The 2023 season got off to the tradition start with the Quoile Yacht club host the spring series on the picturesque shores of strangford lough. With two J109 and two Impala 28's on the staring line in the ICR class there would a race within the race for all competitors. Going to Red got of to a great start with their Code Zero powering them off the start line, allowing them to stretch out a good lead by the time they had made it to mark 5. They did not look back, increasing they lead at every mark, sliding up the the first beat in the deepest part of the lough to get the most assistance from the tide before reaching under some of the competitors in the NHC class with their kite up before taking dropping the kit in front of Killyleagh Yacht Club and beating back up the Quoile River to the take the win both across the line and on corrected time. The racing was tight for the minor places was tight with both the Impala's getting the better of the Jammie Dogger, the other J109 in the fleet. We hope you are enjoying bottom up boats Racing Replays of the 2023 season, make sure you subscribe and get the bell on to get notified of all of our minute long racing replays.
