Early in the morning, these fishermen start to fish in the Ria the Vigo at the westcoast of Spain. The Atlantic Ocean is only 3 meters deep here, close to the coast. So from their boats, they scrape with an iron basket over the seabed. The basket is attached to a long wooden stick. This way they hope to bring out shellfish like mussels and earn their wages again that day.

I found the catamaran very stable despite the very short sea, and the helm was very smooth. On the downside, I wasn’t so sure about the choice of a self-tacking jib: the sail is difficult to trim at points further off the wind and lacks power when sailing close to the wind, which can result in a slightly disappointing heading. The fifth unit of the celebrated SW96 smart custom project is now underway at the South African shipyard. The bulkheads are finally set in place: they are full carbon infused epoxy structures with a corecell core thus weighting less than 1tons, so they can offer high sound insulation levels with no compromise on stiffness, performance, and volume. Confirming the shipyard’s ability to realize an owner’s wishes, Southern Wind is set to deliver yet another carbon fibre performance yacht. Much more is to come: stay tuned!
