In the 2020-2021 edition of the Vendee Globe race, he had been first up this channel. But he officially finished second after Yannick Bestaven was awarded time credit for coming to another sailor’s aid and achieved a well-deserved victory. Today it is Charlie’s day. There is nothing anywhere in sailing like the day the first finisher crosses the line in Les Sables d’Olonne. Harken was there, At The Front…where we must be. There will be time for analysis of the race and full examination of the Harken equipment aboard each boat after a lap of the planet. In this video we’re sailing upwind in 35+ knots of breeze in Johnstone Strait during the VanIsle360 race with a double-reefed main sail and storm jib. A crew member is on the foredeck securing the #3 jib we had previously been flying in the short video https://youtube.com/shorts/VRAEp8M49Y4, but ripped in half. The head literally ripped right off. He is wearing a harness and tether! The sky is completely blue, but everybody is still completely soaked from the spray. Lots of sails were destroyed in that leg, including the #3 jib that is now on the foredeck.
