Passion in Action: Young Boat Builders on Dazcat -1: Working, Playing, or Surviving?

Working or playing? When you love what you do and do what you love there's often no clear line between the two. To design and build outstanding boats, understanding every aspect of the interplay between hulls, wind & water is crucial, as is first hand experience of all the systems and components that bring it to life and the potential effects of minor changes on any of these. Up close and wet on a mighty machine is one excellent way to do that and is exactly what our youngest team members have been doing this season. Design and build have teamed up in the persons of Luca and Pete, and they've been joined by others in their age groups from the yard and local sailing scene, as well as friends from Highwater Sails. D-1 is a well proven weapon and was the training ground for Daz himself who raced across the Atlantic (and won!) in a boat just like this, Clarke's Active Air, the 3rd Dazcat. They say passion diminishes over time but here it just seems to gather momentum. We'll be bringing you much more on D-1's season soon. This new brand of powered trimarans called LEEN (a clever reflection of Neel, being named after the owner and founder of the yard, Eric Bruneel). The first model launched (before the 72 and now the very new the 51) is therefore the LEEN 56, characterized by the two floats significantly shorter at the bows compared to the central hull, and by a platform of large surface-area, topped by an imposing flybridge. The advantage of these new ocean-going multihulls is their very low drag: consumption will be limited to 2 liters (just over ½ US gal) per mile at cruising speed (9 knots). The diesel engine in the central hull can be supported by two electric pods - one in each hull - to facilitate maneuvering in port and for leaving an anchorage with the greatest discretion.
