PAPA Regatta 2021 had it all — intense racing, raw emotions, and the true spirit of competition in every kind of weather. There were victories that lit up the day, and setbacks that forced teams to withdraw due to damage. Local snowboarder Patrick Kitto gave us a few minutes of his time on a powder day to chat about why he loves his Kindred snowboard. He is a local Islander who embodies the passion of boardsports crossover culture. He lives and breathes snow-skate-surf. Pat treats the mountain like a playground, finding reasons to huck himself off every windlip, cliff, roller and chunder nugget. That said, Pat’s true love of snowboarding isn’t just on display when he rides. Besides his street-cred as a local shredder, we think one of the coolest things about Pat is his contribution to the sport through Jump Camp. This is where he pays forward the joy of riding to the next generation. He founded Jump Camp, the infamous grassroots all-ages and abilities freestyle snowboard camp, over twenty years ago! Many local snowboarders have started their progression into freestyle riding under the guidance of Pat and the crew of Jump Camp coaches and mentors. Also, for the past few years he has organized a snowboard drive to provide equipment to local youth and take some financial pressure off snow-loving families. Visiting the Šolta, we stayed at the sheltered ‘Mojito Bay’. The name attracted us, that's why ;). The next day we noticed tourist boats in this bay stopped at a specific spot and people started looking at the water, sometimes swimming, but most of the time leaving again. It turned out that there was a shipwreck called ‘Kontesa’ which sank here and could easily be seen just below the crystal clear water! The ship was built in 1943 and served as a cargo vessel during World War II. After the war, it was sold and converted into a passenger ship, carrying tourists along the Croatian coast. Its sinking in the 1980s was due to a storm, and fortunately, all passengers and crew members were rescued safely. Today, the Shipwreck of Kontesa serves as a reminder of the island’s rich maritime history and provides a unique opportunity for visitors to explore and learn about underwater ecosystems. Over the years, the sunken ship has become a habitat for a wide range of marine life, including colorful fish, octopuses, crabs, and sea anemones. So I got my snorkeling gear and getting closer to the area you could see the top of the ship, it was only 1 or 2 meter under the waterline! Gilles filmed me with our waterproof Go Pro camera, while I was swimming towards the shipwreck.
