The fishing harbor is empty today. A typhoon is approaching, and the village has prepared. The longer I spend in Japan’s remote longevity hotspots, the more I notice a deep awareness of nature, uncertainty, and the limits of control. One side of the storm can bring protection. The other, danger. Living close to the elements shapes more than survival skills. It shapes humility, attentiveness, and concern for one another. Travel with us as we make our way along the Trollatte Canal in Sweden. The Trollhätte Canal is an 82 km Swedish waterway linking the Göta River to Lake Vänern, opened in 1800 and declared a national monument in 2004. Together with the Göta Canal, it forms a 390 km route known as Sweden’s Blue Ribbon, connecting the North Sea to the Baltic, though the two canals are separate systems. Only 10 km of the Trollhätte Canal is man‑made; the rest follows the Göta Älv riverbed, rising to 44.1 m above sea level at Vänern. The canal includes six locks, notably the Trollhättan lock staircase, and passes key bridges and waterways such as Brinkebergskulle, Lilla Edet, and the approaches toward Gothenburg and the Kattegatt. It remains a vital historic and navigational route through western Sweden.
