Red tide is a type of harmful algal bloom caused when certain microscopic algae multiply rapidly in the water. Despite the name, the water does not always turn red. It may look brown, rust colored, greenish, or completely normal. Some species produce toxins that can kill fish, affect marine mammals, and irritate the eyes and respiratory system of people near the coast. Red tide can be influenced by water temperature, nutrients, currents, and weather conditions, but it is a natural phenomenon that has occurred for centuries.
