But the snowpocalypse hasnt stopped the First Mate from keeping the Pirate Friday tradition alive. Heres Pirate Amys special report on winter-wallop 2010 for TheSailingChannel and a new pirate jingle to boot. What does squelch actually do on your VHF radio? When no usable signal is being received, a VHF radio naturally picks up background noise — that familiar hiss. Squelch keeps the speaker muted until a signal is strong enough to break through. Set it too low, and you hear constant static. Set it too high, and you may block weaker transmissions you actually want to hear. A simple way to set it: lower the squelch until you hear static, then slowly raise it until the noise just disappears. That’s the threshold you’re looking for. #sailing #boat #sailor #radio #ship
