Op het kleine eiland Ios in de Cycladen, zijn veel mooie stranden. En vlakbij de haven waar onze boot lag, vind je Koumbara Beach. Dit bestaat uit kleine schiereilandjes, waar ook luxe restaurants en clubs zijn. Maar ook oude vissersbootjes die in ondiep turquoise water bij een landtong liggen te wachten. We zijn er met de drone overheen gevlogen en vonden het er sfeervol uitzien.

Today is International Women’s Day, and it made me think back to the days before I left for this trip. I was nervous. Really nervous. I started coming up with excuses. Reasons why maybe it wasn’t the right time. Reasons why maybe I shouldn’t go. I was afraid of being alone for that long. Afraid of what could happen out here. Afraid that after building this dream for so long, I might discover I couldn’t actually do it. Or worse… that I wouldn’t like it. There was a lot of pressure in that moment before leaving. But then I left. And little by little I realized something: being brave isn’t about not being afraid. It’s about doing it anyway. Every problem I’ve faced out here, I’ve figured out. Every doubt passes once you take the next step. The only thing that would have stopped me was never starting. And today I’m also thinking about the women who made that mindset possible for me. I grew up watching my mom and my grandma be incredibly strong women. They never made me feel like there were things I couldn’t do because I was a girl. The message was always simple: if you want it, go for it. So here I am. In the middle of the Atlantic. Doing the thing that once scared me the most. And very grateful for the women who showed me that I could.
