Color changing is common in marine organisms, but tanning is extremely rare. Scientists from the University of Hawai'i discovered that the juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks in Kaneohe Bay were tanning in the shallow, clear reef waters! (Lowe & Lowe, 1996). Hiking through Shenandoah National Park, this is the point of Humpback Rock right at 3,080 feet. Amazing view on a super cold windy day. About 20 degrees with windchill. Blessed to see such a sight and I hope you get to experience similar views in person yourself. Well worth the hike up.
