Take a look inside North Sails’ brand new UK sail loft, which opened its doors today. The loft is based in Gosport, on the southern coast of the UK, and will house a number of global departments under one roof. These include Superyacht finishing andsail production for One Design and North Sails 3Di. Set to be North Sails’ European flagship facility, the loft will enable North Sails to remain at the forefront of sail technology, innovation and manufacturing. Gosport is the first loft in the world to specialize in superyacht sails, and it’s gigantic raised floor – measuring 1,950m2 – is the largest ever built. A team of 9 designers and 82 staff members are aided by state-of-the-art technology and equipment, ensuring sails are delivered quickly, and safely – with no compromises in quality. The space is split into two manufacturing bays, and the main floor is designed to cater to superyacht sail finishing. Measuring 101x30m, the space can accommodate two J-Class headsails and a mainsail laid out simultaneously. The secondary bay is dedicated to One Design sailmaking and Certified Service sail care. North Sails’ Gosport loft will be opened by North Sails Group President, Ken Read, as well as European COO John Welch, and Peter Dubens – Managing Partner of Oakley Capital and Chairman of North Technology Group. The slipped clove hitch is a useful modification on the standard clove hitch by finish the knot with the a bight in the working end you build a quick release into the not which makes it the perfect knot for securing your fenders to your boats rail. Follow the link below for a full demo. https://youtu.be/NZaBMuOhgWw The clove hitch Along with the bowline and the sheet bend, it is often considered one of the most important knots to know. A clove hitch is two successive half-hitches around an object. It is most effectively used as a crossing knot. It can be used as a binding knot, but is not particularly secure in that role (we prefer the constrictor knot for these use cases). A clove hitch made around the rope's own standing part is known as either two half-hitches or buntline hitch, depending on whether the turns of the clove hitch progress away from or towards the hitched object. The slipped clove hitch is one of the easiest fender knots to untie we would only recommend these for short stays or when you a remaining on the boat while docked. If you will be leaving your boat for an extended period of time the Round Turn with two Half Hitches another option to consider. If you want to learn some other skills for docking your boat why not check out our video which compares the Cleat Hitch V OXO for tying your mooring lines to fixed cleats. https://youtu.be/LepMcTJuFfI If you want to learn the other knots mentioned above check out the links below. Bowline https://youtu.be/zgTD5XD9kTM Sheet Bend https://youtu.be/vKvJ3aKu43A Constrictor Kont https://youtu.be/2Q6-T-vXEk4 Round turn with two half hitches https://youtu.be/M_W3nlil1Ko We hope you enjoyed todays Know Knots demonstration where we showed you how to tie a Clove Hitch on a bight, a great knot for securing your fenders for docking.
