Doing a rig check before offshore sailing? Here’s how we inspect our rigging before every passage. From the top of the mast, we check for cracked fittings, loose pins, corrosion, and halyard chafe — the small things that can turn into big problems at sea. We use a climbing harness (or a bosun’s chair works too), a figure 8 knot for extra security, and always a backup halyard. Clear communication and double-checking gear are key when one of you is literally hoisting the other up the mast. Soñando con las lanillas. Cuando navegamos en ceñida, tenemos que mirar los catavientos siempre. En mis clases de vela, siempre hago mucho hincapié en que hay que estar atento a las lanillas del foque o génova cuando navegamos en rumbos del través a la ceñida. Muchas veces, el tripulante viene viciado por la electrónica y deja esta herramienta relegada al recuerdo. No se da cuenta que una lanilla es más eficaz que la electrónica. No quiero decir con esto que los avances tecnológicos en náutica no sean útiles. Nada más lejos de mi intención. Solo digo que los catavientos, cualesquiera que tengamos a bordo son una herramienta fabulosa.
