Why is a fathom six feet? The fathom began as a body-based measurement: the distance between a person’s outstretched arms. The word comes from an Old English term referring to an embrace or the span of the arms. Since everyone’s arm span is different, the measurement was never perfectly consistent. Sailors used the fathom to measure rope and, more importantly, to sound the depth of the water beneath a vessel. Over time, the measurement was standardized at exactly six feet. So the fathom started with the human body — but the six-foot standard came later. #sailing #sailor #sailboat #boat
