Crossing a frozen pond in the backcountry can be dangerous—but with the right systems, the risks can be managed. In this clip from our Baker’s Brook Pond expedition in Newfoundland, Steve explains how we reduce the chances of breaking through thin ice: testing the ice every few feet, spreading weight on skis, spacing out with ropes, and preparing for what happens if someone does go through. Backcountry travel is all about turning a potentially deadly situation into an inconvenient one. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! Over on the @yachtbuilders YouTube channel we have published a video of one of teh most exciting power catamaran projects I have ever seen. Built by the people who Brought us the 53m Trimarans "Galaxy" and "Galaxy of Happiness", this promises to be an award winning design that will be hugely popular especially in the Bahamas! Our Lloyd’s Register-certified building method leads to hulls so structurally stiff that in first-phase outfitting we leave the deck off so that entire cabin sections can be built off-boat then craned into position, optimising space, with eased accuracy. Here we see the new Contest 63CS receiving a midship module with central companionway, galley and aft cabin entry to left, owner’s ensuite to right.
