Did you know? Eels are masters of environmental adaptation. They are nimble #swimmers with bodies like #snakes and are adept at slipping through cracks and openings. Eels occasionally have the ability to just slide through rocks or #reefs above the surface when attempting to catch some #crabs that hang around on top of the shore's reefs. Due to their extreme laziness, adult eels stay in their reef habitat right up to reproduction. The female Moray's egg will be fertilised by the male Moray on the same reef he stays on, and when the egg hatches into a larva, the larvae are spread and carried to other areas by ocean currents. They are currently merely apathetic drifters. Before finding their own reef to settle on and develop into adults, larvae will spend months, sometimes even two years, wandering around. #Moray #eellarvae are susceptible to environmental hazards and predators. Many larvae do not survive this stage, which is one reason why moray eels produce a large number of eggs to increase the chances of some surviving. This phenomenon called Larval transport is essential for the dispersal and colonization of new areas by #morayeels. Eels will not die of hunger because eels are opportunistic eaters, their diets can include fish, insects, #crustaceans, and even smaller eels. They are just successful hunters in a variety of habitats thanks to their versatility. Do you know any other fun facts about #Eels?
