Why is the ocean salty? Most of that salt starts on land. Rainwater is slightly acidic, and over millions of years it slowly breaks down rocks. Rivers then carry dissolved minerals and ions - including sodium and chloride - into the ocean. Underwater hydrothermal vents and volcanic activity also add dissolved minerals to seawater. Water constantly leaves the ocean through evaporation, but the salt stays behind. Over immense periods of time, those dissolved salts have accumulated. Today, the average ocean is about 3.5% salt by weight - roughly 35 grams of dissolved salts in every kilogram of seawater. The ocean didn’t become salty all at once. It happened gradually, through billions of years of water moving across rock, carrying minerals to the sea, and leaving them behind. #sailing #sailboat #sailboats
