El delfín común llegó a ser la especie de cetáceo más frecuente en el Mediterráneo, ha sufrido un declive dramático en el último medio siglo, encontrándose en la actualidad sólo de forma abundante principalmente en el mar de Alborán. La principal amenaza es la sobreexplotación pesquera de sus principales presas (sardinas y boquerones), aunque también se ven gravemente afectados por su captura accidental con artes de pesca o pesca fantasma (artes de pesca a la deriva), y la captura directa hasta los años 50 debido a la competencia de los recursos con los pescadores.
