The priority for maintaining optimal VMG downwind in waves is to continue surfing. When required to gybe, whether due to your orientation to the course, tactics or wind change - maintaining speed on a wave is critical. Surfing keeps you moving down the course while completing the maneuver. The trick is to initiate surfing by doing a roundup. This allows you to bring extra sheet tension in while accelerating which allows you to gybe on a much deeper angle - hence maintaining connection on the wave. In this video, we've presented some basic steps to take to complete the surfing gybe. The concepts of proper body positioning, sheeting and steering can only be discovered through deliberate practice with coaching. You'd be surprised what you can accomplish with only one session at ISA. What is ISA Online? An online course where you can find the best Laser class resources available.
