Day 9... and our plans changed once again. 😊 Mechanical problems meant Chiharu and Mitsu stayed an extra day on Kikai Island, so our long-awaited karaoke evening will have to wait just a little longer. But no one seemed disappointed. The day began with Radio Taiso on the beach, followed by beachcombing, exploring caves, taking in magnificent hilltop views, meeting local people, and, of course, singing. One thing I've noticed about Chiharu is that she sings almost everywhere she goes. Walking. Driving. Exploring. She laughs easily, notices everything around her, and embraces each day with genuine curiosity. Tomorrow, if all goes to plan, we'll finally reunite for what will be another first—91-year-old Chiharu's first visit to a karaoke bar, where she'll also hear me attempt my very first Japanese song. Da Bangkok con furore... anche in thailandese!

Oggi ci avventuriamo alla scoperta della città. È abbastanza in stile caraibico (quello visto da noi), i palazzi hanno tutti colori sgargianti, talvolta sono abbandonati, altre volte molto curati. Ci sono pochi negozi, poco vistosi. A un benzinaio un gruppo di anziani signori siede all’ombra di un albero e guarda storto chi fa benzina o cammina nei paraggi. Uno barcolla, una signora mi sorride. Poi ci ricordiamo un grande insegnamento di questo viaggio: la parte più bella, più turistica, si trova sempre nei pressi del molo delle crociere. Come da programma, raggiungiamo il luogo ed entriamo in una città delle bambole fantasma. I palazzi, costruiti a schiera, formano un anello dove è possibile passeggiare e fare acquisti. Sono bassi e colorati, il prato è perfettamente tagliato. Senz’altro è un luogo accogliente (se escludiamo che essere gli unici che camminavano ci ha fatti sentire in un esperimento sociale) e abbiamo goduto di uno squisito pranzo. Pro e contro. Ieri abbiamo fatto un acquisto in un locale del posto e abbiamo vissuto una pessima esperienza (culinaria). Pro e contro. Il prato dall’aspetto quasi finto da un lato e un totale abbandono nella cura delle piante, nel resto della città. Fa riflettere. Tu che ne pensi?
