Description Ten days ago, I thought I was coming to observe. I left having learned far more than I expected. This final episode begins, as so many mornings did, with Radio Taiso. Then it was time to say goodbye. Before Chiharu left, I asked her two simple questions. What was your favorite part of your time in Amami? Without hesitation, she smiled and answered: "Sailing the boat." Then I asked: What's your secret to living happily? Her answer was beautifully simple: Walk lots. Eat anything. Be interested in everything. During these ten unexpected days together, I watched Chiharu sail, sing, sketch, explore, laugh, make new friends, enjoy old ones, and embrace every day with curiosity. Ironically, the one thing she was disappointed to miss—because of the delayed return from Kikai Island—was our planned karaoke evening together. As we said goodbye, I smiled and said, "Karaoke next time." Over the coming weeks, I'll be writing a longer article reflecting on these ten days with Chiharu, what I learned, and how her way of living aligns with so many of the patterns I've observed while researching aging and longevity across Japan. For now, I simply want to say: Thank you, Chiharu and Mitsu, for allowing me to hangout with you. It`s been an honor. About this series What began as A Week with Chiharu unexpectedly became ten unforgettable days. Through ordinary moments shared with Chiharu and her son Mitsu, I've been exploring what everyday life in Japan can teach us about longevity, community, curiosity, and living well at every age. https://www.nevertoolateacademy.com/

The first line of John Steinbeck`s book, Travels with Charley, recently shared with me by Professor James McNally, resonates even at 71 In Japan’s longevity hotspots, I’ve seen this same curiosity—this quiet restlessness—alive and well. And I’ve come to believe it’s part of what keeps people living not just longer… but better. I’m Lowell Sheppard—author, sailor, and creator of Japan Solo. After 7 years sailing the Pacific Solo journey, I’m now exploring a new chapter across Japan—focusing on longevity, curiosity, and what it means to live well as we age. Sharing stories from the sea, the road, and the remarkable people I meet along the way. Join me as I explore a simple idea: it’s never too late. www.nevertoolateacademy.com #JohnSteinbeck #Curiosity #Longevity #JapanLife #HealthyAging #NeverTooLate #LifeAt71 #JapanSolo #LifeLessons #StayCurious #aging

Since undertaking the major reframing operation whilst on the slipway, we have now relaunched Hawila and are very happy to be afloat once again! The planks have been slowly taking up and the seams are now tight. We have been busy fairing the inside of the frames to accept the ceiling planks and bilge stringers, which will help to produce the rigidity of the ship fore and aft. Fairing is to shape the frames by planing and sanding to produce a fair and even curve and allows us to fasten the ceiling plank tightly to the surface of the frames. Having completed the fairing in the bow, our team wasted no time in hanging the first ceiling plank. The oak plank is steamed for two hours to make it sufficiently pliable so that it can be bent into shape and fastened to the frames. Once fixed, it adds rigidity to the fore and aft strength of the ship. We are currently working on the refit of our sailing vessel Hawila. This structural overhaul will make her fit for the first Transatlantic crossing. Hawila will be sailing 60 tons of organic products as well as trainees across the Atlantic, in an emission-free way, showing that respectful, ethical, and clean transport is possible. This work is possible thanks to people like you investing in shares! Learn more: https://www.hawila.org/cooperative/#share
