Why do sailors and pilots say “Mayday” in an emergency? The distress call dates back to 1923, during the early days of voice radio communication. Frederick Stanley Mockford, a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London, was tasked with finding a spoken distress signal that could be clearly understood over radio. Much of Croydon’s air traffic at the time traveled between London and Paris, so the French expression meaning “help me” inspired the word “Mayday.” This was important because the familiar SOS distress signal was designed for Morse code. As radio communication moved increasingly toward the spoken word, operators needed something short, distinctive, and difficult to misunderstand over a weak or noisy transmission. “Mayday” was adopted as an international distress call in 1927 and remains in use in both aviation and maritime communication today. The call is normally spoken three times — “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday” — and is reserved for situations involving grave and imminent danger requiring immediate assistance. #sailing #sailingschool #sailboat
