Pulau Papan is a small Bajau stilt village in the Togean Islands, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Bajau are known as the sea nomads of Southeast Asia, and their way of life has been shaped by the ocean for generations. On the day we visited, the village just happened to be celebrating a wedding, and one of our travellers was warmly invited to join in. 💍 What happened at the Bajau wedding? “If a foreign stranger with a camera showed up uninvited and unannounced at a wedding in the UK, it would be a very different story,” says our traveller. In Pulau Papan, the villagers simply said, “Please come in, take photos,” and even let him photograph the bride. “Just lovely people,” he says. 🌊 Who are the Bajau people? The Bajau are a seafaring community traditionally known for living closely with the ocean, fishing, free-diving and travelling between the islands of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. In Pulau Papan, families now live in wooden stilt houses built over the water. 📍 Where is Pulau Papan? Pulau Papan is in the Togean Islands, in the Gulf of Tomini off Central Sulawesi.
