Rip currents can be difficult to spot - and the water may actually look calmer where the current is strongest. Look for a gap in the breaking waves, a narrow channel of darker or smoother-looking water between areas of whitewater, or foam, seaweed, and debris moving steadily away from shore. That calm-looking gap can be deceptive. It may be a concentrated current carrying water rapidly offshore. Rip currents are often easier to see from a higher position on the beach, so take a moment to scan the surf before entering the water.
