The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) long and weigh over 70 kg (150 lbs)! Here are some facts about Komodo Dragons: Venomous Bite Once thought to kill with bacteria, scientists now know that Komodo dragons have venom glands that prevent blood clotting, helping them take down large prey. Excellent Hunters They can run up to 20 km/h (12 mph) in short bursts and have a keen sense of smell—using their long, forked tongue to “taste” the air. Cannibalistic Tendencies Komodo dragons sometimes eat their own young! To survive, baby dragons often hide in trees for their first few years.
