After sailing to Newfoundland’s remote south coast, we established a wilderness base camp beneath the Nuddick and began exploring a granite wall that, as far as anyone knows, has never been climbed. This remote Newfoundland climbing expedition has taken months of planning, multiple gear hauls through difficult terrain, and countless miles aboard our wooden sailboat, Arabella. Now the ropes are fixed, the first routes are being scouted, and our attempt to establish new first ascents has officially begun. Power catamarans have twin engines. That makes them much safer than a conventional single engined powerboat. It also makes them very manouverable. Here I am turning our Skoota 28 in circles without using the steering wheel. You can see the engines are in line, turning is achieved by putting one engine in reverse, the other in forward gear I'm not very good at it yet! In part because the engine thrust in forward is much greater than in reverse, (because the exhaust goes through the propeller), so the throttle in forward needs a delicate touch You can build your own Skoota 28 in plywood from plans by Woods Designs, see more at www.sailingcatamarans.com
