If your vessel is traveling in a straight line and the angle to another vessel relative to your vessel is not changing then you have an issue. You can also use a compass. We sailed to Fiordland in New Zealand and drove my boat right under a waterfall. This was one of the most beautiful places we had ever taken the boat.
