The Alpine butterfly knot, also known as lineman's loop, butterfly loop, butterfly knot and lineman's rider, is a knot used to form a fixed loop in the middle of a rope. There are multiple ways to tie the Alpine Butterfly knot, in today's video we will teach you the wrap method where we form the knot by creating three loop around you hand to form the base of the knot. It can be tied without access to either end of the rope, this is a distinct advantage when working with long sheets or halyards. The Alpine butterfly knot is an excellent mid-line rigging knot, it handles multi-directional loading well and has a symmetrical shape that makes it easy to inspect. Making it great for tying down dinghies, spars, sails or just about anything you can loop your rope around. A favorite stop during our Sea of Cortez/Midriff Islands dive trips is Bahia de Los Angeles where we snorkel with whale sharks. These gentle giants come into this bay to feed. We use the local boats to take us into the bay. The crew looks for the whale sharks and then 4 people can get into the water with them. Sometimes they swim by quickly (there is absolutely no way to keep up with them ) and sometimes they are just happy to eat. We can even see multiple whale sharks at one time! Remember the three rules of snorkeling with whale sharks: 1) Don't touch the whale shark, 2) Don't touch the whale shark, and 3) Don't touch the whale shark. He he he!
