Port Macdonnell is a relatively shallow bay facing the southern ocean and big swells creates a dangerous entry. After picking our path we surf a few waves before we get picked up by a larger breaking wave and end up surfing in at 21 KNOTS! We understand why we are the only sailing boat in the harbour. The Rolex Middle Sea Race concluded on 27 October, marking the end of the 2018 Mediterranean yachting season. See the Rolex film trailer of this 606-nautical-mile offshore race from Malta’s Grand Harbour, taking in the Strait of Messina, Stromboli’s active volcano and the islands of Favignana, Pantelleria and Lampedusa. Among the record 130 yachts competing in the 50th anniversary edition, the 115-ft Nikita was the largest ever to participate. Rolex timepieces were awarded to George David’s Maxi Rambler 88 for taking Monohull Line Honours for the fourth consecutive year, and to Courrier Recommandé, from France, for the overall win.

Rolex TP52 World Championships 2025 Cascais | One of the serendipitous pleasures of travelling in Europe is in coming across some sailing venue or event that was not part of any plan you had. So it was for us when we took a shore excursion in Lisbon, which stopped briefly In Cascais. It was all happening here; a large fleet of Optimists coming ashore at the Club Navale, the Mirpuri Foundation setting up their base for The Mirpuri Foundation Trophy race in early July and a number of TP52s on the hardstand preparing for the Rolex TP52 World Championship, being held from 1st-6th July. Maybe next time we’ll actively plan to come here!
